Crashed Drive - attaching SQL dbase

Hi, I had the dreaded blue screen at one of my stores yesterday. I am bringing the store up on another computer. I have a backup dbase, but it is not as current as I would like (I know - stupid). I was able to access the drive in safe mode and copy the sql files. But, I can't figure out how to attach them. I have tried several methods from online sources and have come up with numerous syntax errors. Any help would be appreciated. I hate to lose the data when it is there.

Here's the simplest way if you have the original db files handy --

  1. Run Store Operations Administrator to create a new store database with the same name as your original database. Example: hobbycentral2 Use the blank database in DB Files for this purpose (rmsdb.bck).
  2. Now stop SQL Server and copy the two SQL data files from the original server into the Data folder on the new database server (hobbycentral2.mdf and hobbycentral2.ldf). Overwrite files of same name (from Step 1).
  3. Restart SQL Server and you should be all set. If not, it likely means the recovered data is not readable or the environment settings have changed. You could also run Reindex in Store Operations Administrator to make sure all tables are fine.

I tried that and it did not work - it hangs up the SQL server. I'm I fixed my problem. I am including the solution here for anyone else that might have this problem - it is not aimed at the partners, but the average user. If your drive crashes, you cannot just copy the mdf and log files for RMS to a new drive. A SQL database has to be associated to the server. (unlike an Access db which you can just copy. The easiest way to move a SQL database is to create a backup and then create a new dbase on the new SQL server from the backup. But as in my case my system crashed and although I had a back up, it wasn't recent enough for my likes. Not to mention that I had several creditcard transactions that needed to be settled. If you can copy the SQL data and log files for RMS you can attach them to a new installation as long as the files are not corrupt. I downloaded every piece of info on attaching SQL databases (including MICROSOFTS) none of them worked. I then found and downloaded Microsoft SQL 2005 Express Studio (FREE). It then took me 2 mins to attach the database. Windows would not boot and so I downloaded a freeware/shareware utility called UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) at UBCD4win.com . It is full of recovery utilities etc. that help you to save your system. I was able to boot from the CD and copy the database file from RMS. My system is back up and running. Incidentally I believe it was a virus. I don't appear to have any hardware malfunctions. My logs indicate my updated Virus protection was scanning when the system shut down.
