With that many shops I'd not recommend hourly connection schedules. Not unless you have some mega server running it. I've seen a fairly good machine not like hourly schedules under heavy use. 29 stores will have an even greater workload.

Personally, I'd schedule them to connect once a night whilst no-oine is using the server. That way the slow downs won't affect the registers or the users at HQ.

My Server is running OS Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with Service Pack 1 with speed of 3.4 GHZ Intel Xeon

3GB of Ram plus a dedicated 512kb leased line for 29 shops , connecting thru VPN concentrator 3000 series... I tried connecting them once every night starting from 12:30am until 10:30am but this was my setup when I dont have a dedicated leased line. Now that I have this setup , can HQ Server can accomodate my 4 or 5 shops connecting simultaneously every hour until my 29 shops is over.Does MRMS HQ Server will allow simultaneous update ? or it will lock my other shop and let it hang ???

thanks

Try to stagger your connections so that they don't overlap. HQ Server will only allow one connection at a time. It's possible to configure more than one instance of HQ Server, either on one server or multiple servers, but MS doesn't recommend it (not sure exactly why).

Try setting the effective date/time for worksheets - especially large ones - to be after hours so that only 401s need to run during the day. That should give you pretty quick connection cycles and let you schedule stores about 3-5 minutes apart without worrying about collisions. By the way, if a store does get blocked, it will retry, so it's not that big of a deal.

Greg,

You don't _need_ a VPN to update the store info. All info that passes between stores and HQ is already encrypted and putting it on a VPN will just slow the transfer even more.

Have your reseller send you a copy of "Optimizing HQ Performance in RMS" as it doesn't seem to be available on CustomerSource and is too large to post. It was written for the changes made in 1.3 and describes some "best practices".

Hi Jeff,

Do you know the reason behind "Install Headquarters Client on a dedicated or little-used machine (but not the machine hosting the store database)".

I have been running HQ Client on the backoffice machine, which is also the machine hosting the SO database, and where my admin does their admin jobs in SO Manager.

What's the rationale for not running HQ Client on the machine that hose the store database?

Done again.

Raymond,

Just a guess here, they are recommending it to keep the speed up, not to have too many processes on the same machine. Especially those stores that only connect once or twice a day could slow it down a bunch. We always try to connect at least every two hours for our installs.

To be honest, we always put it on the database server also, as its the most powerful machine we sell into the business. Dual core, 2 gig RAM minimum and fast SATA hard drives in a RAID 1 mode.
