RMS needs to be modified to be compliant with Texas EBT laws. There are three tax classes: Taxable Taxable Foodstampable Non-Taxable.
- Taxable Items include standard goods such as shoes, clothes, goods, and prepared-served food such as a hot sandwich.
- Taxable Foodstampable includes ready-to-eat items such as Sprite, pre-packed sandwiches, etc. Most people pay tax, but EBT customers do not.
- Non-taxable items includes your standard grocery items, such as apples, oranges, raw meat/seafood. No one pays sales tax.
Right now Microsoft and any merchant using RMS and selling food is at risk of getting a serious fine from the Texas Comptroller. This can be circumvented if Microsoft releases a hotfix to remove sales tax from items that are Taxable Foodstampable when the Tender Type is EBT. The hotfix should also allow the cashier to auto-populate the EBT tender amount based on what items are Foodstampable.
