No, overwriting the opening amounts really does just overwrite. The previous values are not retained. As long as the bank deposits match the final values recorded (allowing for deductions by the credit card processor for their fees), does it really matter how many times they had to adjust the counts? If you see that they did a return or a void right around closing time (thus adjusting the expected totals) you might want to investigate, but things happen with counts - bills stick together, checks get stuck under the cash tray, people get distracted and loose count, etc - it's not really a bad thing to recount to get the right result unless you change the expected result between counts.

It would be possible to make modifications to the RMS database to include audit functions, but I generally don't recommend taking the performance and maintenance hit unless you really have a compelling business case for it.

Glenn,

I understand exactly what you are saying and I have no idea here but I think this question might for this reason. I myself programmed our keys to allow and disallow certain rights to manager(s), cashier(s), office management & owners as I'm sure most retailers do. I had allowed cashiers to do opening counts without the need for a manager to log in and found it to be a problem. In my old system I kept track of "no sales" which to me would be the sale as both the no sale and opening counts in RMS. May I ask you if you can get a no sale report because I have no idea about this but if the amswer is yes then why?

Now to the point, back 20 years ago I was working in the fast food industry while in college and we had a drive up window which the management left the actually key in the drawer so it could easily be opened. Well a taco salad and medium drink was exactly $ 3.25 back then and we all knew the total for that and other combo items people seemed to always order. I'm sure you see where I'm going here and yes some of the employees would tell the customer that the total was $ 3.25 and then collect the money without every running the order through the machine. Having a family business back home I took great notice of this from the mind of a one day owner of my current business. This could have been stopped one of two ways, either by checking your inventory on a almost daily basis which no one has the time to do and enjoy much of a life or to simply remove that key in the drawer which translates to not allowing unauthoized people from getting into the drawer and stealing from a business. I learned that one of my cashiers discovered that you could open the drawer anytime you wanted by just pushing the opening counts button which I know you know. It only took about 2 shifts of this part time ex-employee to notifiy the rest of the staff. As I'm sure you can guess I now require a manager to log in to allow the cashiers to count their own drawers.

Just maybe this is why someone could want a report of this nature. I just wanted you to hear the thoughts from one retailer to better understand where they or someone might be coming from. I have learned a great deal here about changing reports and some simple programming, sql queries, etc. and would how that knowledge from retailers would be welcomed to learn as well. This is no refection of anyone but more just how I try to minimize loss in a business my father spent his whole life building for the sake of his family.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
