Here the generic version;

You don't mention which version of Windows, but if Win9x, you need to restart the machine every couple of days. If W2K or XP, you barely have enough to run W2K or XP, add more RAM. 512 meg minimum.

You might also upgrade your version of MSDE to SP4,

Yes, XP will run in 128 meg. MS always lowballs minimum requirements and then they wonder why everyone is complaining about how slow it is.

Load a couple of programs up at the same time and the computer is constantly reading from the hard drive (very slow) for those programs instead of it being in memory (much faster). More RAM means more programs can be running at the same time.

Remember that you have unseen programs running all of the time. Right click on your task bar, left click on Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and look at all of the programs running. For example, the machine I'm typing on has 129 programs running right now.
