Sales Tax Not Calculated When Spaces in Address

We have occasionally had instances where sales tax was not included for taxable customers. We've realized that this occurs when there is a space in the ship to address at the end of the city or end of the state. For example, we have a sales tax code for FL and if there is a space in the customer's address after FL (FL_) there is no sales tax charged on the customer's sale. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I have never experienced it, but it makes sense it would do that since a space is a character. When the program looks through the tax option's you have setup, it would be looking for one with a space beside the state abbreviation. Since you don't have the space character in your setup, it doesn't find it, and flags it as non-taxable. It is simply an error on the part of your cashier when they are filling in the customers address. One way to try and avoid this would be to instruct your cashiers to down to the zip code field after entering the street address, enter the zip code, and then to the phone number field. The system will automatically fill the city and state in for them as long as it has been entered previously. That way if they are busy they can't mistakenly put a space in anywhere it shouldn't be. If the zip code has never been entered before, they can then, very carefully, enter it for the first time. As long as they are all very careful when entering the different zip codes for the first time, making sure the city and state are accurate, you should eliminate those mistakes. It's not fool proof, but it can really cut down on those errors.

You could also try to add a sales tax code with the extra space for FL - not perfect, but at least tax would get collected (assuming RMS will take the space in a tax code)
