Same category in multiple departments

I have just installed RMS Store Operations, and am setting up my departments and categories. We are an apparel company, so our item categories are Shirts and Blouses, Pants, Dresses, Skirts, Jackets, and a handful of others. We are also a clearance outlet for multiple clothing lines, so our departments are Businesswear, Casualwear, Formalwear, Designer, and Essentials (everyday garments). As you can imagine, most of our garment categories are not exclusive to just one department. "Shirts and Blouses", for example, should appear in every department. However, it does not appear that I can have the same category code in multiple departments. With 5 different departments, I would have to create 5 different categories named "Shirts and Blouses", each with a different category code. When it comes time to put all Shirts and Blouses on discount, my store manager doesn't want to have to pick five different categories.

Is there any way to use the same category and category code in multiple departments?

Hi Bill No I'm afraid not. Our company had the identical question as yours, and after looking into it, we determined that we could not do this. The category table in the datebase is set up to that each category has a departmentID assigned to it. Because of this, you can only have one department per category, and you are limited in the item properties list to only selecting a category that 'belongs' with the department you have previously selected. I know it's frustrating but you will have to come up with a workaround. We created multiple category id's in our different departments that represented the same category, and although it was not the ideal we were looking for, it is working alright for us. We kept the codes as similar as we could. For example:

we have these departments: CODE NAME CA cellular accessories CP cellular phones

here is an example of some category codes we created: CODE NAME CAKYO KYOCERA CPKYO KYOCERA

hope this helps kevin
