Has anyone worked our the SQL to set the primary supplier in Item table to the lowest cost from supplierlist? We now have a large number of items where the price fluctuates and it would be really useful to 'order from the primary supplier' knowing that it was the lowest cost.

When you create a PO select the order from lowest cost supplier option.

Unless I not following with you, you can't do what you are asking for. The PO is going to be generated by the primary supplier or the lowest cost supplier. They won't necessarily be the same. Think through the Boolean logic. It's just like creating a report filter. It must meet all of the criteria.
Assumptions; Generate for all items in the selected group. All items in group selection Order from Primary in Supplier selection
item 123 from abc (primary) @ 1.00, from xyz @ 1.00. PO for abc.
item 456 from sex @ 1.00, from toe (primary) @ 1.01. PO for toe
Assumptions; Generate for all items in the selected group. All items in group selection Order from low cost in Supplier selection
item 123 from abc (primary) @ 1.00, from xyz @ 1.00. PO for abc
item 456 from sex @ 1.00, from toe (primary) @ 1.01. PO for sex
Assumptions; Generate for all items in the selected group. Specified filter, selected departments, select categories will all return similar Order from Primary in Supplier selection
