Possible to see data through MS Access with ODBC?

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if it's possible to look at the data from RMS through MS Access using an ODBC connection? I've read some posts that seem to say it is possible, however I've been having some troubles.

I can't even get an ODBC connection to work with RMS. It keeps telling me SQL server does not exist (I'm using MSDE that came with RMS). Anyone have any suggestions how I can make this work?

Thanks, Matt

Start with making a connection through Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC) > SYSTEM DSN tab > Click ADD > scroll to bottom and select "SQL Server" > follow the wizard instructions from there.

This should get you started. Careful, when you connect to RMS through access the user will have full write permission. You can link to any of the tables. Very helpful to me, I use it all the time

Hi Brian,

That's what I keep trying with the ODBC connection, but I continue to get errors that the SQL server does not exist. I can connect from my laptop to RMS Manager, POS, and Administrator with no problems. But when I try to make an ODBC connection or try to use SQL Management Studio, I cannot connect to the RMS database at all.

I get both SQL Server Error 11001 and Error 6 when trying to make an new ODBC connection.

Any ideas how I can make this work?

Thanks, Matt

Yer it is possiblei have done it my self when doing data conversions from old Epos systems. You are right inusing a odbc in Access try going to file-get external data-import, if you select odbc databases in the file type the select new sql server will be on that list as long as you enter the correct information after this your be fine.

Hope it helps

My instructions didn't help Matt. When he got to the point of selecting a SQL Server instance from the drop down box, none appeared. He's trying to connect to it over the network, not a local instance.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Make sure that he has the rights to the folder/connection.
