POS cannot connect to server

I have installed Retail Management System on a new Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Server. It is version 1.3. I have a restored database which is running fine on the old server which is actually a workstation. The RMS is working well on the new SBS Server.

I have tried to install POS on my laptop to prepare for connecting an existing register to the new server and new installation of RMS.

When I open POS or POS manager on the laptop I get a window to "Change Database Connection". It asks to "Enter the name of the database computer and MSDE/SQL Server instance." I have put the server name and database name (server\database) and accepted the default port. I put in sa and the password and get the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied." I have also tried an active directory administrator name and password with the same result. Can someone help me?

I have joined my laptop to the server domain and can open the database folder from my laptop to browse. Start - Run - server\databasebase.

MSDE is on both the server and my laptop and running as a service. When I doubleclick the SQL icon on my laptop; it shows the server in the window. I have ensured the database is connected on the server and tested it in configuration.

Thanks in advance!

Rob,

I think you have 2 products confused.

There are 2 products from MS with similar names. There is Microsoft Retail Management System (RMS) and Microsoft Point of Sale (MSPOS).

RMS has 3 parts and creates 3 desktop icons. Store Operations Administrator, Store Operations Manager and Store Operations POS.

MSPOS has 2 parts and creates 2 desktop icons. Microsoft POS Manager and Microsoft POS

They are currently _incompatible_ with one another.

The current RMS version is 1.3.0209 and MSPOS is at 1.0 Service Pack 1 Refresh (What a stupid name!)

RMS displays the version number on startup while MSPOS does not.

MSPOS has an option to Change Connection, while RMS does not.

Which do you really have? ;-)
