I have successfully installed POS 2009 (Manager and SQL Express database) on Windows 2008 Server, using an Administrator user called posclient. The main POS 2009 installer laid down the database for me, I did not do a manual install.
How can I determine the SA password? I want to create a new posadmin user with the SQL Server sysadmin role that can be used to run backups and perform other administrative tasks, but my posclient user is extremely limited in what it can do.
You only real option as fas as I know would be to install SQL Express then follow Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 Implemenation Guide PCI Compliance - "Installation using a full edition of SQL Server". Contact your Microsoft Dynamics Partner to get help with the installation.
Graham, The real answer is that the instance of SQL POS 2009 installs does not have Mixed Mode authentication enabled. SQL excepts 2 type of authentication. SQL Authentication, which is older and less secure, is where SA comes into play. By default SQL 2005 and higher only use Windows Authentication. You will have to specifically reconfigure SQL to run in Moded Mode authenication. This will then create the SA user and ask you for a password. You will have to be logged in as an administrator of the computer (or better yet the user you installed on) and then you will have to grant the SA user rights to the database.

What still confuses me is why the "posclient" user doesn't have sysadmin access when this was the user that installed the product, even through Windows authentication.
Rob, as a fellow partner I'm sure you can see situations where you would arrive at a client site and the default installation was chosen without your knowledge. It would be nice to know if there's a back door to somehow get full control of the database back.
