Microsoft POS 2009 Setting up connection to Main Register Issues

Sep 22, 2009 15 Replies

Hello all,

Last night I set up 4 pos machines, one set up with the stores database, and the others I set up to connect to that main system.

The issue I am haveing is that I can not connect my outside systems during the set up faze when it comes to the database options, I select the option for the database is on a main register and I want to connect to that system to access the store database. I get an error about haveing to be in a Administrations user account that is set up the same on both systems to access the database on the main pos, and its all set up that way but its still not connecting to the main pos.

Is it something with the sql database? Is there a way around it? Thankyou for your time and any suggestions or comments you may have to helping me solve this issue.

You are using the Store Operations Administrator to connect to that machine right?

Are you using SQLEXPRESS?

A sample of one of my client machines has SQL_machine_name\SQLEXPRESS in the Server Name field.

Are you us> Hello all,

No the systems useing sets up a default database thru sql 2008 called MSPOSINSTANCE.

Were useing Dynamics Pos 2009 not the RMS software that has the Store Operations Administrator software.

From what I understood on the purchase website the Dynamics POS is a stand alone system that doesnt need the RMS software.

All the machines can see eachother over the network.. and do fileshareing and such but I will not let me connect the new pos machines im setting up to access the main register to populate and sync the database.

Not sure if this gives you a better idea of whats going on.

Thankyou for your time Randy.

The problem is you must have the same user name and password with Administrator rights on all the machines. Once you have setup a common user name and password log off and log back on both machines using the new user name and finish the setup.

This is also true after installation if you want to change certain data such as Cashier security settings on a different machine other than where the database resides.

More detailed information is in the documentation.

Robert RMS Systems > Hello all,

No you have to setup an account with Administrative access and a Password.

Robert RMS Systems > Ok I will try that.. the administration account needs to be exactly the same

Alright that might be where the issue could have continued since I was trying to avoid useing passwords for anything other then logging into the pos software..

Thankyou so much for your help Robert.

I will try to get this all working and set up tonight so that we can open with properly working pos systems.

If I run into any more issues ill be sure to post them. Thankyou All!

I had the same issue, this is what worked for me. After spending several hours on the phone with MS. The easiest way to do this is to create NEW Accts. on all the PC's to be connected, with ADMIN. credentials, with THE SAME USER NAME & SAME PASSWORD. After doing that I had no problems with the networking & could use any user acct. to login after the initial setup. This seems completly unneccarry, but that's what worked. -- Thanks! David D

This is correct. You do need to be an admin on the machine when first connecting and the user name/password must be the same on all machines.

Additionally, please note that the Getting Started Guide explains that if your database is on a Vista or Server 2008 machine, you have to turn off the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy in the registry. You can find details in this KB article:

Thanks,

thankyou thankyou thankyou.. I was on the phone with MS and well they couldnt give me an answer without alot of extra stuff that Im really not ready to dish out.. I had read the Getting Started Guide but I had been working on installing and setting things up for a few hours so I am glad that it is as simple as they said it was.. because that was the key seller on this software and setup.. it has to be easy! :)

I will make all the accounts the same and report back with the results.

Thankyou thankyou all aga> This is correct. You do need to be an admin on the machine when first

database, and

Does anyone else think this seems completely unnecessary?!?

POS should connect through SQL Server and have nothing to do with Windows Logins.

We should not have to edit the registry to get a FINISHED (or so- called) product to work.

It seems Microsoft has really dropped the ball on this one, and is really making me reconsider whether I will be choosing Microsoft for our Point Of Sale in our newest business ventures.

I, too, am having problems when connecting new machines to the database. I have set up an admin account on each machine with the same user name and password, the rebooted them all for good measure. When I connect with the client (i.e., non-database) machine, it asks me for the user name and password, which I make sure to enter correctly. However, it fails to connect complaining "Could not connect to the database. Make sure you type the correct computer name. Also, make sure the computer that has the database is available and that the port you specify is the correct one."

I've seen this at a couple of my stores and have followed all the instructions very carefully. I've made sure to use the correct computer name, user name, and passwords -- all to no avail. I'm using Windows XP SP 3 and have tried it all with the firewall off and on. How else can I troubleshoot this issue?
