error showing up

error -2147467259 i run a shop with microsoft retail management system as the POS software this error comes up on one of my machines and it wont let me open the application because of this error i have a network set up for the machines(4 of them) to run on. what i had noticed was that this machine was not in the same group as the others and presumed that is why the error was showing. i then changed it into the work group with all the other machines and thought this would have sorted the problem but it did'nt have you any light to shed on this problem.

If Steve's replay didn't fix it, can you post the text of the error message?

Hi, my name is Quang, and I have this error running RMS POS in Win XP Home Edition and RMS database on SBS 2003 and SQL Server 2000.

The complete text is: "Error # -2147467259 [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. (Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server) SELECT GETDATE() AS CurrentDAteTime"

If you have any ideas how to fix it, I will appreciate. Thanks in advance.

I fought this one for hours.... This is very poorly documented, I only found it by paying for a support incident. At least in my case I had to use the server name of:

computername\servername

In other words type the computer name from the properties window of my computer, then a backslash, followed by the server name

Hello David,

Where did you insert this computername? Was it in the Paths area or somewhere else? I have spoken to this partner and it sounds as if i have a very similar problem with a different customer.

Rob,

What David is describing is the situation if you install SQL Server not using a "Default instance" and using a "Named instance" instead. When RMS is installed, it installs MSDE using a "Default instance", meaning an un-named instance.

Personally, we always set the IP address manually on the machine running the MSDE/SQL Server and then use the "SQL_Server's_IP_Address\Named Instance" identification instead.

Whichever way you go, the information is entered into the SO Administrator | File | Connect | Server files _and_ the File | Configuration | Server name fields.
