I need to know how to setup items that are sold in single, 6pack, 12pack items such as beer or soft drinks, and those items have a like UPC code.

Phil, Basically you have two different UPC's...12Pack has it's own...so forget about 12 Packs...you really only have Single and 6Packs...for those you do set up a Lot Matrix Item...where the cashier is prompted to select either a Single or 6Pack...and you set the 6Pack up as a Parent Item (under special) for the Single Item. This way all movement is tracked. Best of luck.
