941 Telefile being shutdown

The IRS is canceling the telefile system after the second quarter 2005. They suggest using third party software. Great, being charged to file a tax report. Anyway QB is one provider but it seems to require "Do it yourself" payroll. Are any versions of QB capable of sending 941 information without Do it yourself payroll? We have only two employees and file only quarterly and don't need the payroll function (we enter as we write the check).

No. Intuit charges for EVERY additional function. Also, be aware that you will be required to 'upgrade' your software regularly (at least every 3 years, tho Intuit will try to scare/scam you into upgrading earlier with periodic emails reminding you of the 'sunset' policy).

With only 2 employees it might be worth it to use paper filing.

Go to the IRS website. You can register for EFPTS and fill out your forms and also set up the payment to be deducted from your account on the date you specify each month. I use Quickbooks to enter my payroll manually so it can keep track of the payroll liabilities due. Then I print off the 941 form from Quickbooks and use it to fill in the IRS Form 941 online form.

I've been using the EFTPS site for some months now, but I find no page on it for completing 941 forms online. Where do you find the page?

The only thing I can find on the IRS site is a list of e-file providers who want to sell you software and/or charge you to transmit a form.

If the IRS can accept 941 entries by such an insecure system as Telefile, you would think they would have no problem doing it via web form.....

On the EFTPS site, choose make payments, and then use the dropdown menu to choose form 941. It is important to remember that EFTPS is a PAYMENT system. You still have to FILE the return. There is no charge, other than postage, to file the 941. A fill-in form is available for free from the IRS site

Okay.... My impresssion of your post was that there was a fill-in form on the EFTPS website for the 941.

I've checked into the e-file options. Guess I'll just go back to the paper file.

Thanks, Neil

File a paper 941. I have been using Telefile, but will not pay money to third-party providers to help the federal government save money. File a paper 941 - bury the government in paper until they understand that it is THEIR best interest to restore Telefile or provide a free on-line 941 filing system.

I use EFTPS to make my 941 and 940 payments. EFTPS is an on-line payment system only. It does not provide a means to file Form 941 on-line. File paper Form 941's until the government changes its position.
