job costing without using jobs

Yes, I know that sounds very stupid, but I want to avoid using jobs if only because they make the customer list really huge.

So are there any alternatives? For example, is there something I can do at the estimate/invoice level so that I can still use QB's job costing functions, without actually using jobs? Maybe a custom column? Or am I simply asking for the impossible?

Using Customer:jobs is your option. Keeping everything at a Customer level still allows you to use the job costing tools & reports.

Yeah, I had wanted to avoid creating a million sub-customers, but eventually realized that I could just clear them from the list by inactivating them.
