I'm writing because I just read the posts in response to "3rd Try and No Response" by mxh. A few weeks ago I was I treated rudely as well. At least two people were condescending in their answers. By the time I was finished with the conversation, I felt bad.
Please, folks, if someone is asking a question to a newsgroup/usergroup, they're doing it because they have a genuine need and they've gone to the trouble to find the group to find an answer. Most people give of their time by responding and are helpful. I've been using these groups for years. Whenever I get an answer on a topic on which I am not an expert, I go to another group and answer multiple questions on topics about which I am proficient. I try to give back.
Please, it is a general rule that you don't curse, you don't call people names and make them feel small! If you don't think you can resist, then don't answer questions. This group has no moderator, so it's up to us to moderate ourselves. Please be a nice human being; this world needs it!
1) mxh the OP of the thread stated the subject line of the thread was a lie. When you start a conversation with a lie, what do you expect?
2) Clue by 4's are frequently required in a newsgroup. Few people want to be bothered being human reciters of the information in a help file, or operate as human interfaces to google.
Thanks Karen, but the group does have a moderator, its Allan Martin, even though he can sound a bit snarky he really is a warm human being, just think of him as your grumpy old grand dad.
When did trolling to get a rise out of people or being intentionally argumentative become qualities associated with being a ng moderator? For anyone who doesn't know this, there is no moderator for any alt* hierarchy newsgroup.
That's the understatement of the year.
I actually checked your location to be sure you weren't a sockpuppet after reading the above.
Well, there *is* a lie afoot, however, it's not mine, as is demonstrated below:
Golden Girl: "why are you suprised when you are the only person who has your specific problem?"
mxh:
"I neither expressed nor implied surprise. I merely used a subject line that would grab attention this time around."
So, where is the lie? was the subject line a lie? Certainly not. In fact, I
*did* post regarding the issues I was having twice before. So, the "3rd try" part is not a lie. Also, no one responded to the previous posts. No lie there either.
It would seem that the only lie belongs to you. Having perused some of your posts, no surprise there either.
Are you under some delusion that you actually offered help? Hardly. I suggest you go back and re-read the thread. You didn't even address the content. Further, the issue I put forth was obviously "unique" enough to go unanswered, as you yourself said (I imagine you hate it when you hang yourself with your own words...):
Golden Girl: "Could be your problem is so unique that you are the only one with the problem?" & "why are you suprised when you are the only person who has your specific problem?"
I submit that you are merely a troll, looking for an argument. And, all things considered, not a very good one.
Not true "Golden Girl" has given me some very good help and solved some problems, a lot of the help is in the form of showing you where to look and what to look for. She/He is certainly not a troll.
The golden girls chick is just rude by nature, I also had the misfortune of encountering her already and so far best I can tell from reading the post that she has made throughout this group * ya ok someome will argue it's not a group but usenet* reguardless she is less than kind and I suspect she has little going for her as if she did she would be able to display some decency even online! I hate getting personal but it had to be said! In truth I feel sorry for her!
I see this group as a way for her to vent and relieve the stresses she is under when her medication runs low!
If you posted twice before on a subject and didn't get a response, then why do you think you are going to get one with another post? It's called a waste of bandwidth. [1] People in this group read the posts. If they have input they normally give. The exception being when what is being asked is in plain view in the help file. The posters here do expect that people do a bit of simple research before they ask questions. Helps too if they have a bit of basic accounting knowledge.
It seems like you have a very unique way of keeping track of customers, not the recommended way. I think that fits the term abuse, as in abnormal use. It also seems as if you found your own answer anyway. Not something that was suggested here.
You might have better luck asking how to import that odd database of your customers into Quickbooks so you could stop using it and get all the benefits of the software.
Anyway glad you found something that works for you.
Well, because I did. And in fact, two responders, including yourself.
Actually, if a few text files could possibly "waste bandwidth", the "waste" would be yours. Really, if you had nothing helpful to say, why not remain silent, or at least limit your remarks to your opinion that, due to the nature of my question, I might not find a solution (which, as stated, I did)?
Please try to remain in context. Perhaps you'll remember that you yourself determined that the question was unique, and therefore went unanswered in the previous posts. Why do you now (for the second time) imply that my issue was in "plain view in the help file"? You can't have it both ways, Gary.
It's surprising that you have that perception. My perception is that QuickBooks is available to the general public and that this group is first and foremost, a "QuickBooks software" group. Regular posters to such groups should be reconciled to the reality that there will be posters who lack basic accounting knowledge, yet are using QuickBooks. I think Intuit prefers it that way.
It seems like you take yourself much too seriously.
Correct. But really, the thread that began all of this was a fairly straightforward question about the software capabilities. It was a "how can I..." question The solution to my "dilemma" was not all that difficult, and certainly not beyond your abilities. Presumably, you are here to help people, and perhaps you have, But is it also your goal to alienate those who don't live up to your ideal of what this group should encompass? Is this one of those groups where people should be afraid to post their questions for fear of a condescending reply?
More arrogant presumption, Gary? Perhaps a little self examination is in order.
Perhaps one day I will. However, it won't be due to your input. You've already demonstrated that you prefer to be argumentative rather than provide objective help. One would think that you are the NG moderator. But of course, this group is unmoderated, isn't it, Gary?
That seems very unlikely given your attitude throughout these two threads. Especially the part where you call me a liar. Perhaps you should re-evaluate your reasons for being here?
Your solution was to abandon the thing you were doing, using memos and try a different track. I don't know why you resist using jobs which are part of QB and very well explained in the help files. I suspect sooner of later with classes you'll be back asking why some transaction or another isn't on your report. The answer will be because QB doesn't track classes on balance sheet accounts. There is a reason QB has jobs.
The context is persons who demand answers from others. If they don't get an answer the first time, they ask again and again until they annoy enough so that someone answers them. That is the context. Please try and understand it.
The subject line of your post was demanding of an answer. Perhaps that is not what you meant when you hit send, but that is how it was received. When you seek to annoy, you may get just that. Simple really.
I won't argue the Intuit wants to sell all its products to people who should never use them. But what Intuit does and what happens in this NG aren't necessarily related. Also the group isn't Accounting 101. There are better places to ask accounting questions.
No. Just a general knowledge of how unhappy you will be with the reports QB will generate until you enter the data in the manner their programmers expect. Something about the term GIGO.
The idea has been planted. I can't make it grow, but if you ever do it will at least in part be my doing.
Twist it however you will, Gar...it doesn't change the reality nor the point made, which you are either too obtuse or arrogant to acknowledge. My sense is that both apply. It has been my experience that further argument is generally futile in the face of such benightedness.
I agree, but you are probably going to get "smarmy" answers no matter what you do. But if you state your problem clearly, tell what you've already tried to fix it, and avoid disparaging any product, you should get useful answers. Simply tune out the others.
