We're a small non-profit with a part-time volunteer book-keeper. She'd like to use QB (2010 Premier, non-profit) at home, but has no internet connection. When trying to install from CD, she gets an "Error in license or product number". She's triple checked that it's the correct numbers. Is an internet connection needed to perhaps validate?

Like most software made today it must phone home every time it starts up to make sure you have used one and only one copy. You might be able to use a traditional telephone to talk to a support person in Mumbai who has a method around that, if it is a legal copy.
The program also needs to be updated periodically. Several patches get released each version that fix "bugs". Running out of date software is not always a good idea.
Is she using a laptop that could be brought to the office or a neighbor that has internet access? She'll need internet access to complete the registration/activation process too.
That can't be completely true, since I can run a successfully-installed-and-registered copy of QB on a computer that has no active internet connection.

I'm pretty sure you can register/activate the software manually via phone support, without an active Internet connection.
You can run QB right out of the box but any bugs that have been fixed by an update will still cause you problems.
Yes, you can download the full release from the Intuit Support site. You won't get any interim updates until they are incorporated into a service release. If they fix a bug then you'll just have to deal with it until you install the service release.
You can get your validation code via the phone but the program has to contact the Intuit servers to verify your code so an internet connection is needed.

Good to know...I see I misread your meaning earlier so apologize--I thought it was saying one was stuck w/o updating at all until a whole new release if didn't use automagic updates; eyes apparently glazed over the "service" in service release...
