reporting only some payment methods

Hello there - I have been trying to generate reports that will show only credit card payments or only cash/check payments. When I use the filter function (select multiple payment methods, then which payment methods I want) and apply it, all the data disappears from the report, regardless of whether or not it was actually paid by the method I selected to include. Does anyone know how to make this feature work properly?? Thank you! Renee
