Returning overpayment

a customer has accidentally paid us twice by bank transfer. What's the best way to deal with this so the bank statement, etc all ties up? I entered the first payment against the invoice but what do I do with the second and how do I handle the transfer back?

I am using QB Pro 2002

Thanks

Jon

I would create another invoice then refund it.

Thanks but don't quite understand that. Are you suggesting creating an invoice for goods they haven't had? Not sure that keeps the accounts tidy.

Thanks Laura,

that sounds a bit more along the lines I was thinking but where do you get prompted to pay a credit memo and how do you do it in QB 2002? The only way I can see to use credit memos is to apply them against future invoices.

Think I've worked it out thanks - a cheque icon on the credit memo sorted it :-)

thanks

Yes but how do you account for the monies deposited if you do not create a payment or invoice ,,something to credit against.

Use the Receive Payment screen and just leave the credit on the customer's account. At the bottom of the Customer payment screen you will see an option to leave the credit for later or Refund the amount to the customer.

If you leave the credit for later then you will need to use a Credit Memo/refund to apply the available credit to issue a refund to the customer.

If you opt to issue a refund you will be prompted to write a check to that customer. The appropriate credit memo is created in the background and the check is applied to that credit.

Definitely NOT the answer! N Owen

No, you can just receive the payment against their account - you do not need an invoice to apply it to - that's the whole point of a duplicate payment!!! There is no sale to apply it to, just accounts receivable, customer's account. N Owen
