Thinking of buying Quickbooks

I purchased Quicken for Home & Business which was advertised as being able to handle everything for a small business. However, as soon as I attempted to enter an inventory item it said that it couldn't do inventory and I must upgrade to QuickBooks. However, QuickBooks doesn't seem to have any upgrade deal so it apparently means buying one package only to find that I must now pay full price for a second package. Realistically how many hours does it take from opening the package to when I can have accounts setup and understand what I'm doing? Currently using MS-Money for Home & Business and it took only two hours. But MS-Money doesn't have good inventory tracking. Is QuickBooks good for inventory tracking? Which version of QuickBooks should I get for a home business with 500 different inventory items? I don't have any payroll to do.Bob

I plunked down $52 and downloaded QB Basic. Been working on it all morning. It's very different from MS-Money for Business so it'll be a tough learning curve here. So far I can't figure out how to get to anything I want to use, but after a couple of weeks I'm sure I'll figure out what the programmer was thinking. It is not immediately apparent where things are and it's definitely not intuitive. I think it may be more difficult to adapt when you're accustomed to software that is completely different. I don't think QB will be any easier to learn than Peachtree, and at this point I can get around Peachtree easier than QB. Just a matter of spending time with it. I'll let you know in a month which one I finally chose to use.

Inventory will be the big thing. I'm not sure at this point how QB handles the debits and credits. Does it increase my inventory asset account when I pay for the merchandise or when I enter the items as received? The check has a place for entering an account but I don't want to choose inventory asset if the account has already been increased when I entered the items as received.

USA. Did a Google for financial software, pointed me to a download site, paid my money and I'm up and running. It's version 2005, not 2006, but for the price I figured I'd try it and if it worked, then I'd buy the Pro 2006 version. If it's not to my liking I'm only out $52 so it's no big deal. I'm viewing it as sort of like a paid demo.

I can't imagine where you were able to download a full (and legal) version of QB 2005 Basic for $52. Maybe you could share that link with the rest of us.

And I can't imagine why you would download QB2005 Basic, knowing you are definitely out the $52 if doesn't work or isn't what you want, and knowing that it will then cost you the $52 you already spent plus another $159 more to get QB2006 Pro if it does work and is what you want -- especially since you could have just bought QB2006Pro for $159, tried it, and if it wasn't what you wanted, get all of your $159 back.

&offset &category=Financial/Tax I needed something to begin using soon or else I'll have to wait until the first of the year. It would take a week to get the pro version here. I'm in a rural area with no software stores within 30 miles.

You are correct, it is counterfeit. I checked the serial number on Intuit's site. I then made copies of everything and reported it to Intuit. The price didn't seem strange to me because it was last year's software and it was listed through Nextag.com. I'm not out any money. I had put it on my Visa card. I'll send them copies of everything including correspondence with Intuit and I'll dispute the charge. Meanwhile, I have a number for Intuit so I can get a legal license number. I'll buy the pro version while I'm at it. Thanks for your insight.

The same name and address also appears in the TOS for download. Either this guy doesn't know that the software is pirated or else he is boldly selling pirated stuff thinking he won't get caught. Should be interesting when he gets a call from Intuit or other authorities.

Even if it were legit it does not matter. As a new user you should always start out with the latest version, especially when 2006 is so much better than older versions.
