Wachovia Question

Considering changing banks at this time. I use CheckMagic to print all my checks. Does Wachovia require MICR ink or can you use plain ink? Also does QB 2005 transmit the memo line to Wachovia? With my current bank, I must use MICR and although I fill in the MEMO line on the check, that information is not transmitted to my current bank. Also if you have the same information with regards to Bank of America?

Thank you

My personal bank is Wachovia. I have no clue as to whether they accept non-Micr checks. You would have to call the bank and ask. Additionally, understand that Wachovia is not your only concern... if you use checks to pay bills and to purchase supplies at retail stores, you may be limited to what is required of your vendors' banks.

As to your question about memo's, what do you mean? QB has absolutely nothing to do with 'transmitting' memo lines from checks. You can certainly use the program to print checks, and you may add a memo to be printed for your reference and for reference use by the person who cashes it, but the program has no control over how your bank processes checks with memos, and what information appears on your statement. It is common to see processing dates, check numbers, and amounts on your statements. You should have copies (or the original checks) returned with your statements.

Tried to get many banks to answer these questions but alas customer service doesn't enter the 'technical' area and they have no idea what it all means. As for the memo field, it appears that some banks accept the memo field from QB online transmission and some banks do not. I send both physical and online checks to vendors and therefore had the two questions.

birder,

I went through an ERP system upgrade a couple of years ago. With it, we looked into this exact question. The suggestion from the ERP software people was to write yourself a check and bring it to the bank (without micr ink). Ask them to process it. If it flies, you're good to go. The company I worked for at the time is now printing complete checks on regular laser printers, with no hassle from any banks. I think character recognition has come a long way, and better toners (OEM) has enough iron in it to make it a non-issue.

The only place on the check that might have needed the micr ink was the routing, check number and account number on the bottom line anyways, the rest didn't matter.

I was hoping you would call for me. I'm real busy now and would appreciate it.

That is great. We all know that if we have to spend a few extra bucks for different ink the world would cease to exisit as we know it.

I believe that the OP wanted to save money by not having to order pre-printed checks. He should be cautioned to use security type check writing paper available at office supply stores.

Call your branch, not customer service and ask for a MICR spec sheet. This is required from the bank by companies that print checks commercially. It gives all the details that the check printer (this is a business forms printing company that print checks on a printing press with inks, not a desk top printer) needs to produce the check. The people that prepare the MICR spec sheets will know if they are magnetically or optically reading the check. However, your checks may have to conform to a wider standard as they could be processed through different organizations as they are processed before they are presented to your bank for payment. In this case they may want magnetic ink to ensure the checks will process on all types of equipment without incurring extra charges for non-conformity.

Sorry, magnetic ink is used ONLY for the bottom routing, bank and account numbers at the bottom. If used for any other area it is just for your convenience to not use another ink and not used by the bank.
