2 versions of Quicken on one system?

I have a new computer using Vista. Is there a way to install 2 versions of Quicken on the same hard drive but in to 2 different directories? (When I try to, the system wants to wipe out the old with the new). It's a long story but I want to keep my own accounting running on Quicken 98 (!) but do a client's accounting on Quicken

2005.

The Quicken 98 seems to have installed successfully but during installation of Quicken 2005 it doesn't give me the chance to select an alternate directory -- it simply warns that the old version will be removed/written over.

Thank you very much.

Well -- no. When you choose the option "Custom Install" in Quicken 2005 it immediately goes to a screen that says that the system has detected an older version and is going to uninstall that older version. Thus -- my original question.

you can install a new version of Quicken without ever having the older version removed.

As far as I know, every version of Quicken permits the user to choose the directory where the program will be installed.

Choose the "Custom Install" option in the installation dialog.

I probably should have put a qualifier in the post you're quoting from.

The option to avoid the uninstall is intended for those versions of Quicken that go out of their way to find old versions and uninstall them: that approach began with Q2006. The CTRL+SHIFT won't do anything for older versions.

But older versions don't need the option because they will only uninstall a version of Quicken that is in the directory they are being installed to.

The key to keeping any already-installed Quicken versions when installing a pre-Q2006 version, is to do a "Custom Install" and choose to install to a folder where there is no existing Quicken version.

Well, I tried this suggestion (holding Control + Shift and clicking NEXT) but it didn't work. I didn't receive the message box saying that the installer would skip checking for uninstall. Maybe they left this out of Quicken 2005? Boy -- I'm really disappointed now. Any other ideas?

Sorry -- this doesn't work. If I choose "Custom Install" on my Quicken 2005 -- it immediately goes to a screen that says it is going to remove the older version. There is NO opportunity to choose a different installation folder.

I think you're either misinterpreting what you see, or you have a faulty CD (or do you have a CD?). I tested this specifically with Q2005 just before I posted what you're replying to and I was very definitely given the opportunity to Browse to a new installation folder when I chose Custom Install. The custom install has existed for every version of Quicken I have owned, and it has always permitted choosing the folder to install to.

Some time back someone indicated that the way to do this is to install the later version FIRST (in OP's case 2005), THEN install the earlier version (in OPs case 98).

Hope that works for you. (It did for me).

And before the CTRL+SHIFT override was known for Q2006, the simple answer for those wanting to have Q2006 + an older version installed, was to let Q2006 uninstall the older version (or uninstall it yourself), then re-install the older version after Q2006 was installed. Worked like a charm.

Thank you so much -- you guys are awesome. I uninstalled the older version, installed the newer, and then reinstalled the older and they both seem to be working perfectly. Thank you for sticking with me to solve this!

Here's a twist on the other solutions. I have two folders: Quicken2001 and Quicken. The first folder has Quicken 2001. (I use this as an interface with Quicken Financial Planner (QFP) which I still use for my retirement planning as the built-in retirement function of the current versions of Quicken is full of @%)()(*$#.)

The second folder has the current version of Quicken - for me, Q 2007. Before Q

2007 that folder contained Q 2006. Whenever I install a new version, it looks in the Quicken folder and says it will uninstall whatever is there and then install the newer version. It never touches or asks about what is in Quicken2001 which is fine with me.
