A Problem with Quicken 2008 H&B

Sep 16, 2007 4 Replies

I have a "Vanguard Brokerage" Account which holds two equities:

1- Blackrock NY Insurd Municipal Income Trust (BSE)
2- Walt Disney (DIS)

In addition I have a "TDSP" account with my previous (pre-retirement) employee which only holds one equity:

1- Large Company Index (no symbol)

Things are very straightfoward, there is no BSE or DIS in any other account, and no Large Company Index in any other account.

When I display Investments|Portfolio, all accounts and equities show up correctly: Vanguard Brokerage contain BSE and DIS and TDSP contains Large Company Index.

When I display Investments|Investing Accounts|Vanguard Brokerage, the overview tab displays BSE and DIS correctly. The Transactions tab seems to show the proper transactions.

When I display Investing| Investing Accounts|TDSP, the Overview tab correctly show Large Company Index. But when I display the transactions tab, it only shows transactions for BSE. I cannot find my Large Company Index transactions.

What steps can I take to recover transactions into their correct accounts? Also, can I do editing of multiple transactions, as this looks to be a big job.

Thanks for any help you can give me to know what to do to get this mess cleared up.

What do you see when you run an Investment Transaction report subtotalled by Account?

Vanguard Brokerage shows a few transactions for DIS and many transactions (mostly ReinvDiv) for Blackrock.

TDSP shows one transaction for Large Company Index PLUS one suspect transaction for Blackrock NY (that clearly doesn't belong there).

I'm befinning to think I should manually delete this transaction and re-enter it (if I can find the real transaction in my paper records) in the right register. What do you think?

I'm inclined to agree. I don't think you should have anything to lose; I hope that's all there is to it. (I would backup first).

[You might want to see if you have told Quicken to "Show hidden (investment) transactions". That option is in Edit >

Preferences > Investment Transactions. If the box isn't checked, I would check it and take another look at the account "register" and the transaction report. And if you see anything you haven't seen before, I'd do a little reading up on "Placeholders".]

John: There is still something very wrong with Q2008 H&B. In fact I've been able to delete transactions and re-enter them and make my balances come much closer to the paper records. BUT at one point I had the following situation (again, corrected by removing everything and re-entering them). My practice, to account for dates differential in account transfers, is to set up an account "In Process". My 2005 MRD from my TDSP account was $16,027.80. I wanted:

12-16-05 TDSP->In Process $16,027.80 12-24-05 In Process->SvngsAcct $16027.80

In converting 2007 to 2008 something got duplicated...there were extra transactions. I removed them all and reentered them. At one point I had the first withdrawal from TDSP above entered. When I went to the In Process account the deposit on 12-16 wasn't there.

I closed Quicken and re-opened it. The deposit was still not in the In Process account, although the TDSP withdrawal was there.

At this point I re-deleted everything, closed and re-openeed Quicken, and just entered the 2 transactions above from the TDSP and the SvngsAcct accounts. I closed and reopened and all seemed well. But something funny is going on. And a number of my Q2007 transactions seem to have not been transformed properly without a lot of coaxing.
