Cannot import Vanguard download to correct investment account

I go to the Vanguard site and download (and save) a .qfx file for my brokerage account at vanguard.

In Quicken, I open the Transaction page for my brokerage account.

I select File | Import | Web Connect File

I get an info box that says "You are downloading transactions for the following account: (then lists the correct Vanguard acct)

This same info box goes on to give me 2 options:

  1. Use an existing Quicken account
  2. Create a new Quicken account

The problem is that option 1 - use an existing account - only gives me a choice of 2 accounts, neither of which is the Quicken account to which I am trying to import.

Can anybody tell me how to import to the desired Quicken account?

I have also tried not saving the .qfx file, but importing it directly from the Vgd website with the same result as described above.

I'm using Quicken 2006 Premier Rel QA5

I have tried searching this group (in GoogleGroups) but don't find anything. Sorry, but if it is there, I am using the wrong search terms.

Thanks

It's probably there a ton of times, but I couldn't tell you just what search terms to use.

Go to the Overview tab of the Vanguard account, click the "Change Online Services" button and deactivate the account for downloading. Then start the import process ... your Vanguard account should then appear in the "use existing account" list.

I also have Vanguard Accounts, both Brokerage and Vanguard.

Before you do anything to Quicken, first use the Quicken Backup to backup your file. I've set up a few Backup folders so I can backup a few times a day if I want to.

What I have to do is to setup my Quicken account so that is is NOT for online services. I create the download file for Quicken in Vanguard adn save ti to my hard drive. I then go into Quicken into the account I want to import into. I then do a File/Import/Web COnnect File. It will then pop up a box to ask you which file you want to import into. Your file will be listed. Select it and it will import. The next step is crutial! After you accepted all the entries you then have to edit the account setup, click on Online Services and Remove from One Step Update! That last step is the key.

One you import, you can't do it again under soem circumstances that I can not determine, even though you try to download from Vanguard again whcih also will not download the same transactions a second time. Backup the Quicken file just in case of a screw up where you selected the wrong account, etc (shit happens). I do screw up once in a while, you probably don't screw up liek I do I know :).

You don't say it but you probably have funds also from Vanguard all in the same Quicken account as the brokerage funds/stocks. If they were seperated into two different accounts, one for Brokerage, one for Vanguard, you probably would not have to do it this way. I have the same problem. Since Quicken does not support any way to seperate the transaction or to export/import, we're stuck with this procedure. It's a minor inconvenience.

I hope this soleves the problem. Let me know.
