Vanguard - changing from mult to single account

When I first setup Quicken 2000 and my handful of Vanguard accounts, I set them up as single/individual accounts. Not sure why... Also, I don't think Vanguard had direct download support at that time, and I had to manually download the activity via the Web Connect.

I'm running Qucken 2004 now, and still manually go to the Vanguard site, and invoke the web account download. Anyway - now all my Vanguard funds are under a single Vanguard account, and I recently found that they also have direct download support - I think :)

So - what should I do to merge the funds into a single Quicken 2004 account, with the sub-fund entries - - and yet still retain all the historical information ?

They do.

Export each account to a QIF file; import the various QIF files into a new Quicken Vanguard account ... or one of the pre-existing ones, though I think a new one is cleaner. (Backup first).

Not sure I understand this distinction.

Export/Import using QIF files will do this.

Maybe highlight all the transaction in an account, cut and paste into the master account.

If I recall correctly from my limited time with Q2004, multiple transaction cut/paste was not available until Q2005.
