merging multiple accounts into single account

Mar 20, 2006 6 Replies

On my Vanguard mutual fund holdings, (about 5 funds), I currently have them setup as single accounts in Q2004. They will not auto-download as the accounts now appear as sub-funds in a master Vanguard account. So - for years I have been doing the manual website download, which is pretty easy, and invokes Q2004 to update the database.

I'd like to have this use the normal online download, and it looks like I'll have to take my separate single fund entries and merge them all into a single fund enry.

Suggestions on how to accomplish this ? Is there any simple way in Q2004 ?

My brute force was was/is - Backup the Q2004 data files :) Export each Vanguard fund into a separate QIF file. Delete all the Vanguard funds from Q2004. Re-establish the Vanguard account & the sub-funds Update (download) to verify the new scheme works. IMPORT the QIF files with the historical transactions. Fix up any dups or errors.

You might be able to save some effort by editting one (any one) of the single mutual fund accounts to turn it into a "normal" (i.e., NOT SMF) account, and then importing the remaining accounts into it.

BTW, in your 2nd para were you state "single fund en[t]ry", I assume you're referring to a "normal" brokerage account that happens to hold mutual funds and NOT discussing merging disparate Vanguard products into a new SMF.

Is there a way to make the backup automatic in 06 - at the end of each session with NO human intervention? Perhaps Q wants me to feel grateful every time I see the backup screen. I use a 2nd physical drive on my pc which in turn is copied to an external drive once a week. Perhaps I could/should turn off the backup in Q and just rely on my backup routine.

yeah... I might do that, since it wants to reset the "single mutual fund" attribute when I force a single account download. At least I have the Quicken 2004 Export QIF file command. I wonder if that function (Export QIF) is gone in later versions beyond Quicken 2004 ?

you wanted a "new" topic, but happen to reply... I started a new thread for the topic.

You can do what I did because I wanted to keep the accounts as seperate accounts. I called Vanguard and had them assign seperate account numbers for each account. You have to be persistent to get them to do it but it can be done. Each of my Vanguard funds now has a seperate account number and downloads just fine into Quicken.

Well, today I combined my various Vanguard single fund accounts into a single account. Just to replicate the process for all accounts, I Exported each account into a QIF file. I started with a new definition account, and downloaded the existing account info for each account. Then I Imported the QIF files. Next was the tedious task of manually going thru the Transactions, and manually deleting each duplicate entry for each mutual fund. I reconciled each fund with the status on the Vanguard website. All done - good for the number of shares and current holdings/balances.
