Checks Format

I write only a few checks, and I've been buying them from ASAP because they are cheap. However, I am annoyed that Quicken Deluxe 2013 prints the memo a little too low. That's important because it tells the payee how to apply the money. Anyone getting checks elsewhere that do it better?

Like you, I write very few checks. Many of my bills are paid automatically, and almost all the rest are paid through Quicken's Bill payment. Only a handful remain to be written--perhaps a dozen or so a year.

So if you too write very few checks, why not do as I do, and write them by hand?

That's too simple a solution, Ken. Many people in this ng absolutely insist on complicating the Hades out of the simplest thing!

It's one of those once in a lifetime moments, Sharx. I agree with you.

jo, my comment comes from my own experience...I often complicate the hell out of almost anything.

OK, that's it. Not one useful response from this learned group. I will not respond any more.

You may want to investigate Checkmagic. I have used it for years and am completely pleased with it. Their prices for check stock are very reasonable.

Jim, I apologize if my comment to Sharx sounded dismissive of your question . It was really a poke at him, since we usually are at war. I too write very few checks, and in fact have never printed any checks from Quicken, b ut have had clients long ago where alignment problems with every form they had was a source of annoyance, so I do understand.

I suppose my only questions would be how many checks are you talking about and if there are really very few (I write about 5 checks a month) what is y our reason for wanting to print them rather than writing them?

Long time ago, there used to be a way with printers (maybe dot matrix) to s et a very fine micro adjustment value to get perfect alignment. What kind of printer are you using?

Don't go away. People don't always take my questions very seriously either :(

OMG, you actually admit it? And you aren't ranting at me! You're such a nice guy sometimes :)

Before you give up, you might look at Checkmate4Quicken, a program that works through Quicken to print on standard checkbook checks. I've been using it for years, currently with Q H&B 2013 running on WinXP. It has a good alignment tool and would probably solve your problem for you, assuming it runs on whatever modern flavor of Windows you are running.

The big problem is that it might be unsuppported now. Their website went over to godaddy a year ago. I did find a vendor for the software, and some pieces of the original website, at:

I was GOING to say, "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out!", BUT what I REALLY mean to say is that, sometimes, the most practical way in dealing with a problem is simply to EXAMINE the way you WANT to do it and ask yourself, IS IT REALLY NECESSARY to have to use checks where one could easily use another MORE MODERN method of payment. After reducing the number of checks to a minimum, simply write out what few checks you have to, manually. Voila, end of problem.

jo, contrary to popular opinion, I am NOT a saint, never was, never will be. I'm sure that it is an annoying problem to the OP--sometimes another way of dealing with such a problem is simply "sticking it on the back burner", as it were. Often, in the fullness of time, a solution appears, e.g. switching to a more modern method of payment. Deity knows that checks are on they way out, at least up here in Canada.
