Data changing by itself issue(s)

Is anyone else having a problem with data changing without human intervention? I have experienced this in Home & Business 2007 & now in

2008.

Last March I started documenting strange happenings including: 1) Net Asset Values changing from actual to $1 2) A security showed up on a report in an account that didn't hold that security 3) A saved report suddenly didn't have the handles for adjusting the column width 4) A saved report that was saving history suddenly had lost 2 historical reports 5) A dividend entry disappeared 6) A cleared item suddenly and unexplainably was no longer cleared 7) Attached an invoice to an entry in a credit card account with a flag. The attachment icon & flag were visible on the line item. When the next line item was entered the icon & flag disappeared from the original transaction & attached itself to the new transaction.

In each case I looked at a backup copy of my data & was able to confirm that the transactions were recorded correctly and had changed since the backup. I started documenting these problems in March of this year when they became more frequent & more disturbing. Most were found in March & April, but today (11/4/07) I again found reconcilled transactions that were now showing unreconciled. I upgraded to H&B

2008 about 3 weeks ago.

I just uncovered problems #8 & 9.

8) I have an asset account "Petty Cash" and most of the entries have a split distribution. When I used the edit function "Go To Matching Transfer" on the 1st distribution in one of my entries, an error message popped up "This account is no longer available". I then went to the transfer account which was very much available, and found 3 (YES 3) entries that were all tied to the same distribution that had just generated the error message "The account is no longer available". I went to each of the 3 entries and one at a time used the "Go To Matching Transfer" function and each time ended back at the distribution line that generated the error message. 9) When a transaction is distributed to another account (instead of a category), the payee & memo information appear in the transfer account the same as the originating account. It is possible to change this information in the transfer account without effecting the information in the original account. I sometimes do this for clarification. This was the case in the problem #8 above. My backup dataset confirmed that I had changed both the payee & memo for the transaction that originated in my "Petty Cash" account. That information is now showing in the transfer account (in all 3 occurrances of the entry) exactly as it appears in the "Petty Cash" account.

It sounds like you have a corrupted file. I have Home & Business

2007 and the only thing that ever seems to have a mind of its own is whether the Price History or the Market Value is shown in the graph on the page for detailed security information. I can't find a pattern yet, but it's only a minor issue, unlike yours.

Thank you for the response.

I have no idea how the file could have gotten corrupted. What could I do to fixing it? Any ideas?

Those files seemed to be fragile back in Q2004 days. A memory problem, a goofy system freeze...anything can screw up a database. Since I've been on Q2006, I've been amazed how resilient it's been, in view of my archair OS, which I shall not even mention to the laughter it would produce. I freeze frequently, usually in or after using IE extensively, but sometimes in Quicken. Last night, for instance, I got an explicit "out of memory" message (rare to ever know why it's quit), but that was also after extensive IE work. The file was still intact when I rebooted, even tho I had to do a hard boot into DOS (remember that?) and run scandisk and fix some bad file sizes and lost clusters.

The Validate procedure is supposed to detect and repair damage, but make a backup first because its been known to create problems (I haven't experienced any). Intuit also has a service for this but of course it charges. It may be worth it.

If there was a single area that you could localize to the changing values, you might have other options, like exporting the data, deleting all the entries relating to that area, and reimporting (rebuilding the file). I think it was John Pollard who solved a problem I had in invoicing in QH&B 2004 (or maybe I had upgraded to

2006 but with the same problem) using this method. I hadn't been able to add new customers for months, and it was really messing up my bookkeeping. I could invoice old clients for new activity, just not new ones (at least not with Quicken). I forget which Quicken category of information I exported, deleted, and restored.... probably the address book.... but it solved it.

Unless others post to the contrary, I would try running Validate to see if it tells you anything. I empathize with your frustration. If Quicken doesn't work for me,I have panic attacks :}

I thought of something else to investigate. Have you done a Scandisk and Defrag of your system recently/at all? What Os are you running?

Actually, they don't charge.

You do have to convince tech support that your problem deserves the free service, but if you are very patient, they will try to fix your file for free (you upload your file to their web site; they fix it - if they can - then you download the repaired file).

Good to know. I got the impression that tech support generally didn't take anyone's problems seriously unless you paid for it.

Installation, conversion, and known bugs are among the issues for which there is no tech support charge.

Thank you everyone...I guess my last reply never did get posted.

I did a validate and it was OK...at least no issues showed. As far as sending the file to Intuit goes, that will never happen! I mean who would send a file with all of your financial data ANYWHERE?!!
