Dreaded "Placeholder"

In order to do my 2004 tax returns I had to make the number of shares in one of securities right by removing some shares. Quicken needs to know the cost basis for those shares.

I have owned this stock since 1983 and there have been reinvestments and splits. I started using Quicken back in the late '80s but I was a bit sloppy. Can someone tell me how to figure out where the error in my records were so I can eliminate the need for the adjustment in the first place? One thing that might help is being able to display a share balance vs time, but I don't think Q05P allows this. TIA.
