Q quirks

Using Q '05 Premier. I opened & converted an '02 Quicken file, and updated investments. Now I'm trying to deal with placeholders, which I allowed for the first time.

Maybe I don't understand the various investment windows, but in the Summary window, under a particular stock, not all transactions are listed, even though they are obviously accounted for. For a simple example, I may have transactions on Oct 1, '02, '03, & '04, for 1000 shares each date. Those show up correctly in the Transactions window, but in the Summary window the total shares is 3000 but only the two most recent transaction appear. I'd say there was some limit set on how far back transactions go, but other securities show all transactions going back a lot further. Am I missing something here?

Also, other transactions show up in the Transactions window as, say,

1000 shares at $14/share for a total cost of $14,000. The math is just that simple. A pure Buy; no splits, or dividend reinvestments or anything even slightly obtuse. But, in the Summary window, the same transaction shows up as a $14,000 buy at $14 a share, with a total of
999.9986 shares and the total of all transactions is off by 0.0014 shares. What the heck (to be polite)?!

I would prefer to eliminate the Quicken placeholders by correcting existing transactions, adding any missing transactions, and deleting the placeholders. (I don't think I'm off on the total of any of my securities by more than about 0.3 shares.) Maybe I should just leave the placeholder and shrug my shoulders, but surely Quicken can manipulated more accurately.

I'm sure this has been covered here, so I apologize for not digging the answers to my questions out of Google. I did make a weak attempt. Maybe it's good to go over old ground from time to time for the casual readers here though.

TIA

Jim

I just did the same; but did not keep the placeholders ... and I do not see any problems such as you describe. I don't have any definitive answers to your questions below, but perhaps the placeholders you have are responsible. If you have placeholders for the securities that are exhibiting different behavior in different windows, I would try deleting a placeholder for one of those securities and manually entering the correct history to see if having the placeholder is part of your problem.

One other thing you might try: where you see a Bought transaction in the Transaction List but the lot does not show in the Summary window, delete the Bought transaction and re-enter it, then see if it shows in the Summary window.

I do not see this; I have purchases dating back to 1971 and those lots show up in my Summary window.

I'm not at my computer now, but I tried deleting the placeholders and I didn't see how to do it. It's like they are there from now on. Of course I haven't read the online help and I don't think I even tried ^D, so it may be perfectly easy to delete them.

Tried. Doesn't work. Maddening. I also deleted and re-entered the transaction that had me buying 999.9986 shares for $14,000 at $14 a share. It was still 999.9986 shares in the Summary window. Did I already say maddening? It's kind of scary when your bookkeeping program can't do math any better than that. And in case you miss the implication here (which I doubt), what is the point of having placeholders for 1 ten-thousandth of a share when the program is only doing math correctly out to 2 digits past the decimal?!

Unless a good solution is quickly forthcoming, I think the lesson here is to not accept placeholders, but to fudge real entries if necessary instead. That can't be worse, can it? At least when we're dealing with < 0.01 shares.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, enter the transaction as buying 1000 shares at $14,000.00. Let Quicken incorrectly calculate the price/share. 'tis better than having the wrong number of shares in your account.

Good idea. I tried it. It doesn't work. It's like there is no connection between the Transactions window and the Summary window. But then I tried totally deleting the 999.99886 shares transaction. (For those keeping up, this number is the actual Quicken-calculated number, not 999.9986 as I previously stated from memory.) When I deleted the transaction it was replaced in the Summary window with a placeholder for 999.99886 shares. Grrrrr.

*Why* would Quicken muck with my simple entry, especially if it can, and will, plug in a placeholder of its own for whatever number of shares it thinks my entry may cause the number of shares in Quicken to differ from the number of shares reported through a download from my brokerage? Let me enter an accurate transaction, i.e.: 1000.00000 shares, and then plug in a placeholder for .00114 shares, if that's what it thinks *I* am screwing up by. I really find Quicken's behavior in this regard to be rather bizarre.

Jim

I can enter the same transaction without any problem; there is something amiss in your file, and/or something missing in your description.

In a previous reply you said you could not delete placeholder entries; I do not understand that. I can, and have deleted them.

I think you need to look deeper than you have.

John,

You said I need to look further. Well, I have, and here's what I've found:

I've been working with the security that had the 1000 shares changed to 999.99886 shares. I fudged one of the other lots, adding 0.00114 shares. The lot that was 999.99886 (my first lot) magically changed to 1000 shares.

Why Quicken would do that rather than adjust a placeholder entry, I don't understand, and, not understanding, I dislike Quicken's action. Maybe I'm still missing something.

The shares are still worth about $14 each, so 0.00114 shares amounts to about a penny and a half. This is out of about a $300 dividend, so I'm just not going to waste much more time being anal about this.

I have also found out that my brokerage, E*Trade, lists transactions in their statements to 3 decimal places, in their online portfolio to

4 places, and internally (or where their CSRs can see them) to 5 decimal places. What Quicken gets when it downloads must be 5 decimals. So there is plenty of room for rounding errors.

I still haven't figured out about some transactions not appearing in the Summary window.
