I cannot find anywhere whether I should install 2009 program over 2006 or whether I should erase 2006. This would of course involve in saving the quicken data files.
Install 2009 over 2006

This question comes up quite often - see the thread "Uprade questions from
2006 to 2008 - Newby needs help." in this NG starting around 12/13/2008. Short answer is, you don't need to worry about it; Q will install 'over' the old, and create back up copies of your old data as part of the process in case you need to revert back to the older version.
Q will uninstall the older version, install the new version and then backup the current database and upgrade it when you first load it.
Having said this, you *REALLY* should backup the database first and put it in a safe place. Then print out several reports that will help show any unexpected changes to the upgraded database. I usually will run a Validate on the database to highlight (and fix) any problems. One source of upgrade problems is often in a corrupt database.
Once the upgrade is done, print the same reports and verify nothing has changed....
