Investing Center and Net Worth tallies are off (Q2007)

Investing Center and Net Worth tallies are off by about $50,000 ! How can I fix this? I can't see any way to do this. TIA

(I'm not updating software) :)

Not a lot of information there. How did you determine that they are off? Are all accounts being included in the total? Are all accounts correct? did it just change from a different figure?

You could also try recalculating the register(s).

Open the investment account "register" (or "Transaction List"); put your cursor in the list of transactions, hold down CTRL while pressing the character "Z".

This may be a bit more work that necessary, though deleting and re-entering investment transactions can sometimes correct a problem.

You might try walking the Portfolio view back in time (changing the "As of" date) until you find a time when things are in sync. Then look at the transactions that occurred around that time; consider deleting and re-entering those transactions.

By this time I had already deleted pretty much all the transactions in the account (I have a backup), but it didn't help.

I believe I might have made a breakthrough here, but don't know how to close the deal.

I don't know how I got to this screen but it showed my accounts and revealed that I had 26,273.00 as Unclassified (Asset class).

I don't know how to get to that unclassified class and deal with it. (Remove it).

I confess to being confused about exactly what you're seeing, so I haven't tried to offer any specifics before. But your reply opens a small door.

Asset classes are controlled at the security level; you can change asset class breakdowns by Editing a security in the Security List and clicking the Define button.

Normally, you get asset classes downloaded when you do a One Step Update; the same part of the OSU process that gets quotes, gets asset classes for your securities. If you don't agree with the downloaded asset class breakdown, or you don't get any breakdown, you can set it manually in the Security List. If you want the manually set breakdown to stick, you should uncheck the box to "Download asset class info".

You can see asset class breakdowns with values computed in: Reports > Investment Asset Allocation. You can customize the report to display a single account, or a single security, if you are trying to narrow down a problem.

Having said that, I don't see how re-allocating asset classes can change the total market value. In the end, 100% must be allocated to some asset class ... "unclassified" is just a catch-all.

My original inclination was to think you were looking at values from different dates; either different report/display "as of" dates, or that a future dated price/share was affecting some of the values. But you seem to have refuted that notion.

The only other thought I have is to try walking back something like the Investing > Portfolio display, changing the "as of" date until you find a date where values look correct. Then look at (and consider deleting and re-entering) transactions on, or soon after, the last date when values were correct.
