Memorizing & categories

I've been re-doing all my 2008 transactions in Quicken 2007 - easier than trying to convert from MS Money - and have all the credit card downloads. Suddenly Quicken is not including the categories, which it started to do, for instance the supermarket I use most. I've changed the rule so that the 2 variants of this store use the same name, but I don't know why they are no longer categorized as groceries even though that appears on he memorized transactions list.

I can't discern the problem from your explanation. I think you need to provide more detail; an example might help too.

Here's a bit of background information to try to give some perspective.

Renaming rules are only applied to downloaded transactions, and only before they are "Accepted" into your register. Once a transaction is in your Quicken register, renaming rules do not apply.

QuickFill only assigns categories to transactions when they are new: either as a downloaded transaction with a "New" status; or a manually entered transaction ... when it is first entered. [Naturally, there has to be a memorized payee that matches the payee name in the "new" transaction ... after any renaming rules are applied.]

Once a transaction is in your Quicken register, Renaming Rules and Memorized Payees play no role in the contents of the Payee Name or the Category fields.

Not useless; very useful, but only applicable to future downloads.

For existing register transactions, use Find/Replace to change payee names, categories, memos, cleared status, etc.. Using Find/Replace, you can easily assign the category "groceries" to all transactions where "Walmart" is the payee, for example.

Things are non intuitive. What I do if it is going to be a repeating transaction is to see what is downloaded then Create Renaming Rule. Then based on that I create a memorized transaction. You can then close Quicken and reopen (in technical terms - refresh cache...:) ). If when you reopen the account, and you don't like what you see - repeat once you made some corrections.
