Quicken Home: Memorizing Transactions and Column Width

Hi there,

I have Quicken 2008, I had to upgrade because my bank no longer allows downloads via Quicken 2002.

Is there a way in this version to customize the memorized transactions or to apply a filter when downloading that will add a label/category for Payees starting with a name but have different location numbers , for example, Chevron #23 is the payee but I wish to categorize all Chevrons as Auto Fuel?

Also, the register fields, specifically payee is cut off. I'd to like to widened the field. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

I think you can use a combination of the Memorized Payee List (Ctrl-T or under the Tools menu) and the Renaming Rules (under the Cash Flow menu) to accomplish your Chevron example. Quicken will start to "remember" the categories as you enter the transactions from Chevron #xx. You can edit the categories in the Memorized Payee List.

I don't think you can resize the register fields. Are you using the one-line display or two-line display? On my register, using the two- line display, the Payee field is the widest (and only) field on the first row. The second row contains the Memo, Category, and Tag.

Hope that helps,

Dave

No.

But I don't think that Quicken is truncating the payee name. The Quicken payee name field is over 50 characters long. But the OFX specs (that control the format of the downloaded data) only allow for a 32 character payee name.

You should be able to use Renaming Rules to convert short payee names to longer payee names.

Thanks Dave, John.

I am using one line display on some accounts while two line display on others. I do realize the names aren't cut off, just not completely shown.

I can't seem to locate the renaming rules under the Cash Flow menu.

Unless I am doing something wrong. With the renaming rules feature, you have to change the entire Payee name. For example, Chevron xxx Las Vegas is changed to Chevron so now all Chevron transactions [starting with Chevron] will have the same name. I then set up a memorized transaction for Chevron and assign a category to it. However, there would be no way of differentiating which location or state this transaction applies since they're all are grouped into one Payee. That's not quite what I had in mind.
