Memorized Payee Transactions

I have used memorized payees for years without problems. Now when I bring up a memorized payee the prior payment shows up but it will not let me make changes to the dollar amount. I have to delete the memorized payee and start over. Anyone have any ideas?

Try this:

go to Memorized Payees List and remove the "lock" check mark.

Reply to
Taxed and Spent

None of the payees in the list have a check in the lock column.

Windows or Mac? What version/release of Quicken (see Help > About Quicken)? How, specifically, are you attempting to modify the Memorized Payee amount? List the steps you take. Are you able to modify all the other Memorized Payee fields, other than amount?

Windows 10 Quicken 2020 Version R30.14 Build 27.1.30.14

I select the payee from the dropdown payee list and hit tab to go to the amount (it has always taken me there in the past) - nothing happens. I click in the amount box and nothing happens. I am not able to change any amounts in split transactions.

Everything worked fine until several weeks ago.

I have tested in R30.14 with several different memorized payees, including one with multiple transactions and another with a split transaction: I am not seeing any problem.

Is this occurring for multiple (or all) memorized payees, or just one?

If multiple, but not all, memorized payees, do the problem memorized payees have anything in common - such as having a split transactions?

Try deleting a memorized payee that is giving you problems and re-creating it, then try using it again. If that helps, I'd say you have some corruption.

Do you have "Sync" turned on (See: Edit > Preferences > Mobile & Web)? If so, I suggest you:

- Delete the cloud file associated with your Quicken data file

formatting link
restore from a good backup

- turn off sync in the restored file (until Quicken gets the Sync problems fixed)

If Sync is not involved, try validating your Quicken file.

- File > File Operations > Copy (do not change any of the options)

- (open the copy)

- File > File Operations > Validate Then test using memorized payees in the Validated file. If the problem no longer appears, keep using the Validated file.

If that doesn't help: try creating a New Quicken file (File > New), create a test account and a couple of test memorized payees and see if the problem still occurs.

If the problem does not occur in a New Quicken file, that is an indicator that your current file has corruption ... which the above Validate could not, did not, fix. I know of no sure way to overcome that, but you could try deleting all your memorized payees, then re-creating them all (backup first). Quicken offers a mechanism for automatically creating memorized payees from your existing transactions - it won't duplicate the deleted memorized payees exactly, but may ease the process of getting the list back where you want it.

To clear/re-create the Memorized Payee List:

- Open the Memorized Payee List

- Select all the memorized payees as you would select multiple files in Windows Explorer

- Click the Delete button on a selected memorized payee

- Close the Memorized Payee List

- Open the Tools dropdown list

- Hold down CTRL+SHIFT while left-clicking Memorized Payee List.

I have not had a chance to check all but it appears to be happening only with memorized payees with split transactions.

I have tried deleting a payee and recreating it and that did not solve the problem.

I tried vaidating the file and that did not solve the problem.

UPDATE I am running Quicken on a computer with version 2004 of Windows 10 Pro. I copied the Quicken data file to a computer with version 1909 of Windows 10 Pro and there is no problems with the memorized payee transactions. I need to do a little more work but it appears there may be a compatibility issue between Quicken and version 2004 of Windows

10.

In my experience, incompatibilities between Quicken and Windows are possible but infrequent. But, FWIW, I am running Windows 10 Pro version 1909.

If you want some additional assistance, I suggest you try posting this problem, with your suspicions, in the Quicken Community. With luck someone there will be able to help. And in particular, user Chris_QPW is VERY knowledgeable about Quicken and Windows, and I bet he has Windows 10 Pro v. 2004 (though I'm not suggesting he's the only one there who does).

My bad. I had wrongfully assumed that my desktop and my laptop were running the same version of Windows 10; but they're not.

I just tested (Q2020 R30.14) on my Win10 v 2004 laptop, and I am still not seeing any problem with memorized payees.

I'm not sure about "possible," but I can attest that I've never personally had such a problem, nor have I ever seen one on any of the computers I support for family and friends.

I'm running Windows 10 Professional 20H2 now, but I've had every release of Windows 10 installed here, and Quicken has run without a problem on all of them. I've never seen an incomptaibility

FURTHER UPDATE AND RESOLUTION I browsed the Quicken Community Group for memorized payee list issues and found a lot of them but none similar to mine. The consensus was tthat update R27.24 corrupted the memorized payee list. I went back to my laptop running Windows version 1909 and checked the Quicken version. It was R19.44. I have Quicken installed on that computer as a backup so it doesn't get updated ofter. Everything was working fine with R19.44. I updated to the current Quicken version and the memorized payee list problem popped up again. I then reinstalled Quicken version R27.20 and the memorized payee list worked OK again. I guess now I will reinstall R27.20 on my main computer and skip further updates until this problem gets resolved. Thanks for you help.

As I noted earlier, I am not seeing your (or any memorized payee) problem in R30.14. Sorry, I can not remember which specific releases I used before R30.14, though there were quite a few (the earliest previous release I can account for is R26.17 which I currently have running on another computer with no problems).

I don't understand why you would still have the problem, if you had R30.14 open your good R19.44 file, or your good R27.20 file.

When you say the problem "popped up again", what exactly does that mean?

Did you try using a memorized payee "immediately" after opening the R19.44 file in R27.20? Or did you do a One Step Update, then test for the problem. The most common cause of corruption in the more recent releases of Quicken is allowing Quicken to Sync to the cloud (Edit > Preferences > Mobile & Web. Sync = ON).

[Personally, I would not expect any future release of Quicken to "repair" your memorized payee list. Typically, the best you could hope for is that subsequent versions/releases would not corrupt the memorized payee list (which seems to be true for R30.14).]

I am only using one data file. If I open it with R30.14 I have the memorized payee problem. If I reinstall R27.20 and open the same data file memorized payees work OK.

It means I couldn't make changes to memorized payees.

I have never used the sync funtion.

So at Edit > Preferences > Mobile & Web, Sync is OFF?

I suggest you post your problem in the Quicken Community, with as much detail as possible. There are people there who may be able to help; and it would probably be a good idea to make your problem description available to Quicken, in case you're having issues that are different than those already reported.
