Migrating from Q2000 to Q2006 and new computer

Neighbor running win98/Q2000 saves his data to 3.5" floppys. (No CD/DVD burner) Has just received a new Dell machine and installed Q2006 on it. He is having trouble reading the data on the floppys. I do not know if it is possible or not but the files on the floppy's are Qdata.qb1, Qdata.qb2, Qdata.qb3 and a D3.dir file. (Spanning the data files??) Should you be able to read these from floppy and have them converted into a Q2006 data file. TIA

Yes.

No. You can not "read" those files; the *only* thing you can do with them is "Restore" them.

If you are unable to "restore" the Quicken fileset from the medium they were created on; I think the only thing you can do is to use Windows to copy the fileset (QDATA.QB*; where QDATA is the name of the Quicken data) to the root directory of your hard drive ... then restore from there.

Thanks John for the quick response. I did have him copy the files into a folder on the desktop called "finance" and have him try to restore, but he claims nothing happens. Guess I will have to make the drive to his house in the morning. His old computer is on the 'fritz' so was going to take my ide to usb cables and alternately try to get the data off of the old HDD. Can't remember if the file 'naming' (qdata.???) is any different on 2000 vrs 2006. Tx

And I should have said; forget any "D3" file.

You might also insure that the files on the hard drive are not

*read only*.

The names of the individual Windows files in a Quicken fileset can change from Quicken version to version ... and the actual files present can also be different depending on certain selections by the user ... such as the " Tax Planning" file, present only if one elects to do Tax Planning. (If you need to work with the fileset using Windows, just stick to the QDATA.* approach, and you can't miss - the QDATA part is up to the user ... the extensions follow logically).
