Upgrade from Q2004 Basic to Q2006 Basic

I purchased Q2006 Basic (on CD) to upgrade from Q2004 Basic. According to the Quickstart card, Quicken automatically converts the Q2004 data file for use in Q2006.

I started the Q2006 installation and it displays that it will uninstall Q2004 program before installing Q2006. Will this eliminate the file conversion needed for Q2006 during installation? Or will it retain only the converted Q2004 file for the new Q2006 installation?

I did not want to lose all of the information from Q2004 as a result of upgrading to Q2006.

Please advise. Thank you.

Uninstalls do not affect data files; they uninstall "programs". It has always been thus.

Thanks. I guess I had forgotten the process was as you described.

First of all, the upgrade will:

1) Uninstall only the program, not the account files 2) Copy the Q04 files to a backup location 3) Convert them to Q06 format

Having said that, the general process I would follow is to:

1) Backup the Q04 files to a location different from my (or Q's) usual location 2) Use Q04 to create a "copy" of the account file(s) 3) Run a Validate on the account file(s). Resolve any issues before continuing 4) Run several reports on account balances, Capital gains, etc.. These are your baseline. 5) Upgrade 6) Run the reports in step 4 and compare. Resolve any differences. 7) Backup the account file(s)

Thanks for the information on backup and validation steps. I will use this procedure.
