Upgrading to Q2009

I asked a month or so back about any 'gotcha's in going from Q20006 to Q2009. Well, you can add me to the list of pretty much happy customers. The install went clean as a whistle, my accounts are find, online access all works and altogether it was painless. I haven't played with any of the new stuff in Q2009 [especially since I've been forced to move to Deluxe -- I was always a "basic" guy].

One thing I'm hoping will prove to work is the machinery for access cranky-website for bank updates -- one of my banks only provides quicken support by a tortuous logging in and clicking around process after which I get to download a file and then double-click that file and [they tell me] quicken will magically figure out which account the transactions align with and do all the right stuff... We'll see..:o). But in any event, all that mickey mousing is [to me] a HUGE PITA compared with "one step update" and going to get a cup of coffee while everything updates itself, so I'm hoping that there's some way to automate that kind of bank in Q2009...

There's nothing you can do to activate the one click download function. The problem is that Intuit charges banks a lot of money to provide that functionality. If your bank has decided to pass on paying Intuit, the only alternative is to download the transaction file from the web site.

Not true; as stated.

Starting around Q2007 (maybe Q2006), Quicken has offerred a new download method known as "Express Web Connect". EWC allows a user to include Web Connect downloads in One Step Update ... IF the financial institution permits it (and I do not believe there is any extra charge for this, over that for Web Connect), and IF the financial institution does not have an MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) requirement that prevents Express Web Connect from working.

I believe that it is MFA that is the problem when EWC does not work: different financial institutions implement different approaches to MFA. There are some users who report that EWC works for them consistently, some users who report it works intermittantly, and yet others for whom it either never works, or doesn't work enough to be worth the effort. I believe the real varient is financial institution, rather than user.

So: while some users are disappointed in Express Web Connect, that does not change the fact that it is possible to use One Step Update to download from financial institutions who normally offer only Web Connect downloads... if you have the right financial institution.

Ah, thanks: I vaguely recalled some discussion about this a few months back but I didn't remember what it was called. I'll both check with my bank and go through the Q2009 help stuff on EWC to see if I can get it to work. Thanks!

Well I'm really impressed. I went into the accounts stuff and updated the name of my bank [I hadn't bothered to do that after the last 'takeover' since it didn't really matter previously]. AND: quicken said that downloads are available. HUH?? So I clicked on the boxes, gave it my access# and password... and it just worked, exactly as if there were a "direct connect". I have no idea what magic Quicken did to make that all work, but it is *very* slick [and I didn't even need to know anything about EWC or anything: it set up just like my Wachovia [which does has direct-connect] did... Very cool! Thanks!

I faced the same decision because I usually pay less by upgrading to a version that is less than current. This time the difference in cost was so minor that I decided to go from Q2006 to Q2009, realizing that I was taking on some "prototype risk" as we call it in my business. Sure enough, my Q2009 crashes more than it should (Q2006 was very stable for me) but it works well enough to where I am not yet regretting my decision.

I also noticed that the upgrade appeared to have dropped two check book transactions so I had to sort out what those were and then go back in and re-enter them. Well, that is just plain weird; I can't go back to Q2006 to verify that they were there in the first place but I can certainly say that my checkbook reconciled fine before the upgrade. I think I will guard against this in the future by writing transaction reports to files for future reference! In this case I had to find my paper checkbook register from mid-2005 in a dusty old drawer.

I have just started exploring the differences between Q2009 and Q2006 and the only thing that I notice immediately is the Tag field which looks pretty good and I will definitely be using that.
