Out of curiosity, is there any way to navigate to older versions via the home page/support links on the Intuit site? I've certainly had no success that way even thru search or site map at getting to anything older than 2005 other than directly thru the backdoor.
The usefulness of the links at the reference site is that they do point to pages that have information of what's included in the revisions I couldn't find any way to access from the front door. (They may be there, but they're surely not easy to find if they are).
I did update my QB Pro2000 to latest and save the download for posterity but afaict there were no substantive changes to anything actually functional other than web interface stuff which is of no interest to me. I wasn't going to update at all except one noted an enhancement in editing memorized transactions that I thought might be of use but it was of minimal help at best when I actually looked at it--in fact, I'd have to go read the release notes to figure out what nit it was that was modified--it certainly wasn't what I was hoping that could modify the payment amount for subsequent payments w/o having to re-edit the whole transaction folderol...
Anyway, while it's good to have the latest (I guess), it basically simply reinforced my opinion Intuit is grasping at straws for updates that have real meaning/value and hence the change in features to keep the revenue stream ongoing...
Not that I am aware of. I think they want to maintain their sunset policy as best they can. Knowing that updates for older program versions are available is pretty much being kept a big secret. About 2-3 times a year I have the need to search for an older update. I usually find that any link that pointed to an Intuit web page usually no longer works or is incomplete. Your web page at least covers more versions than anything I have seen in a while.
That is probably true for most software companies so Intuit is not alone in that department. There have been numerous enhancements since 2000 but if your version suits you and still works fine then I don't see any harm in not upgrading. I'm not one of those that have the need to always use the latest software.
You will have no choice, however, if you ever upgrade your OS to Vista or Windows 7. Until time stick with what works for you.
I said that about getting vista. My machine crashed at a time when MS had pulled the XP option off of new machines. As a result I now have Vista on my personal laptop. My work laptop still has XP on it. I have clients still using older software that won't run on Vista.
I got 2005 basic running on Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit. I moved it from the XP toVista 32 bit and then to the 64 bit. It was a hassle but it works. You have to get past the flash crap and one other problem shows up near the end of the installation and you just click ignore. Presto it works. I thought it would be a problem between the 32 and 64 but have not found it yet. I now have it on my new Dell with Vista Home Prem.64 bit working fine for me. I never update it because I learned my lesson on an early version they sunsetted and I had done the updates so I was forced to pay fot the upgrade to 2005 to get it to work on my new Puter.then. When it starts asking to register do it over the phone and enter the code numbers they tell you and be sure to check no auto updates. I know some of you have to do updates for payroll and such. I am sorta retired and only use it for checks so I dont neeed the the bells ect. I just like being able to look back at who I paid what . I will see how long I can keep 2005 going. Larry
I have a client who dumped MS for Ubuntu recently. Only problem now is finding a decent QB replacement. GnuCash does not seem to be the right product for her.
Can't help there, sorry...I'm to the point in retirement mode I could just as easily do what I'm currently doing w/ QB w/ a spreadsheet so it's not an area I've researched at all. Being an engineer whose computing interests are essentially all computation-intensive, the business/user-interface portion of the OS is of minimal interest.
I watch a.c.s.f.qb simply as I on the rare occasion can actually answer something and do also on occasion learn something useful... :)
may be of some interest. I can't comment personally on any; a former coworker (also independent contractor engineer) uses Quasar is all I know of it but it seems to do the job for him. The others on the Wikipedia page I know nothing of other than what's there.
thanks again. I will take a look at them. I set her up with GnuCash in January. She's a retail/gift shop in a tourist area. There's little or no money coming in in the winter time so we went cheap. It is doing its job but a little clunky. She's not the "swiftest" person so that may be part of the problem. Switching to linux may have been too much of a learning curve for her.
