old account deletions

Using Quicken 2004. I have a bunch of old bank accounts and stocks that I sold that I have not used in years-I changed banks several years ago . Every time I want to do a transfer from my current saving account to my current checking account, I get this small drop down menu of accounts and since my new bandk is WAMU, it is last in the list and I have to go through about 8 Farmers & Merchants obsolete account names to get to the WAMU names. How can I get rid of the F&M accounts? Obviously they add up in the scheme of things to give me my current balances in other accounts and I don't want to mess up my current account balances. I would like to freeze the "old" accounts yet be able to access their information only. I will upgrade to the newest Quicken when I get my new computer after VISTA comes out in February and not have the old stuff there to burden me. I want just to import, if that is the word, the current accounts and stocks I have and not the old stocks I sold nor the bank accounts.

Thanks Steve

In my Quicken 2007 H&B if I just rename inactive accounts by adding an "z" in front of the name, the accounts drop to the bottome of the list.

thanks Bob that is an interesting idea. But I still would like those old accounts out of the way. Who cares what I did ten years ago or what accounts I had years ago? - except for historical purposes. Worst case is that when I upgrade to the newest Quicken after buying a Vista computer in February, I will just enter the current stocks I own, ira's, and accounts in as new database like I just was introduced to Quicken for the first time and freeze the old database for historical purposes. SInce I have retired, a lot of my accounts are no longer in use for me and are just in the way. simplify. simplify.

I'm not sure on Q2004, but in Q2005 you can go the the Account List and the Manage and select hide accounts for those accounts you don't want to show up on the transfer list etc. They're still there for history, just unhide.

Charlie K's got it right. Just go to Tools > Accounts List > Manage Accounts and check the "Hide in Quicken" box for each account you don't want to make entries to any more. You'll have to remember to "Show Hidden Accounts" in the reports generator if you want to include them in reports, but that's one of those "non-fatal" errors.

I know of and use the Hide the Account for old accounts. My problem is that the names of the accounts still appear in the drop down box when I want to transfer money between a couple of savings accounts and my checking accounts and Visa. Like I said in my original posting, the old accounts still appear. I would expect that a hidden account would not appear in the accounts to choose from for transferring money in that deop down window. Some of my old accounts are ten years old and what do I need them to appear for in a current transaction window? nothing.

You didn't say that in your original post.

You also didn't say in your original post that you have told Quicken *not* to "View Hidden Accounts". (Which is found in the Options menu on the View Accounts tab in the Account List.)

John You must be stressed by the holidays, this is so not like you!! So he didn't say it in his original post, but now he has, do you have a solution to his restated problem? You usually do. Merry Christmas to you I have always been impressed with your knowledge of Quicken.
