changing bank acct # of old account

I had to close my accounts at the bank due to identify theft (a smart teller stopped the person before any money was taken). The bank opened up new accounts and transferred the balances in the compromised ones to them. Can I get away with just changing the account numbers of the old ones to the new numbers and keep using them or do I have to go to the trouble of creating new ones and accepting the transfer of funds that I see downloaded in OSU? I don't want to proliferate dead accounts if not necessary.

BTW: I have no idea how the people got both my checking account # and even worse, my driver's license #. I write very few checks and to the same people repeatedly. I have direct debit on utility bills. I don't carry a checkbook with me and I dont put anything with financial information in the trash or recylables. The driver's license is even more mysterious. Once in a while I have to show it for proof of identity when I charge something, but that's the extent. The crooks made up a new card, but misspelled my last name and with a new picture. How in the world did they get my number and address?? I'm not missing any bank statements or communications from the DMV. I also live in Philly and the attempt to get money was done in Camden NJ. The woman caught said her neighbor "told her to do it." I haven't gotten any more information than this. Scarey.

Thanks,

jo
