moving just a few accounts to a new quicken version

Jul 06, 2007 7 Replies

I sold a bunch of stock and mutual funds last year that I maintained in Quicken 2004. I just bought the new 2007 Quicken program and want to install it and start new. I do not want to import all my data from the 2004 program that I was using since the stocks and mutual funds sold last year no longer exist. I also have old banks that I no longer use that I do not want to keep.

but there are some stocks and mutual funds still existing that I want to carry over, plus bank accounts, back to day one which is in the

1990's for some. can i move individual accounts over by themselves?

Steve:

I think it would be easier to just copy your current file to a new name, then delete the extraneous accounts in the file you intend to use going forward.

Thandk Bob for the hint. What do you think happens when all accounts are related (i.e., stocks bought with funds from bank, etc) and you delete one of the related accounts? what happens to the one you want to keep? by deleting the source of funds, for example, would the saved account show a debit that is owed to reconcile the account? Steve

Steve:

Well, in that case, I would consider just hiding the "inactive" accounts instead of deleting them. You never know when you may actually want to access those accounts in the future.

speaking about hiding accounts,............i have done with with obsolete banks and such, but they still show up in the window when I want to transfer money from one account to another. In other words, I have many, many accounts that get in the way of finding my current checking account. Since the list is alphabetical, my Washington Mutual account appears at the last of the list and I have to go through many, many accounts to get to it.

I still am unsure what happens to related accounts when you delete an account. what happens to the totals of the kept accounts?

Steve:

I did what you are contemplating many years ago. As I recall, I ended up with many "orphaned" transfers. My "workaround" was to create @deposit and @withdraw categories, and customized reports to ignore those transactions, since they would ordinarily be a "wash." I HIGHLY recommend against that course of action, it is FRAUGHT with gotchas.

I think that was a bug in Q2004. I don't think you should see that in Q2007 unless you have told Quicken you want to "View hidden accounts".

An easy way to solve that specific problem is to rename the "old" accounts with a "Z" at the beginning of the new name.
