OT: IRS Question

About a month or more ago, I got a letter from the IRS asking if I had forgotten to include the fact that I had paid $300 in estimated taxes that I had not declared when I filed (and paid what I thought I owed).

I got the proof of payment and sent it to them.

Any idea how long it will take them to process a refund?

Hi, Juan.

Read the IRS letter again...carefully.

From what you wrote, it seems they didn't need proof of payment; they already knew that you had paid the $300 estimated taxes. They just wondered why you did not claim that prepayment on your final 1040.

Sounds to me like they know they owe you some money and are trying to refund it to you.

Read their letter again. And please let us know how this turns out.

I sent them the name of the bank my check was written on, the date and the amount.

I don't claim to be the tax expert that RC is, but from what you've said, I think the IRS is suggesting that what you need to do is not to send them what you did, but to file an amended tax return.

Actually, I called the IRS and was told that all I had to do was to write to them stating that on April 12, 2012, I had sent a check for 2012 estimated taxes but failed to include that on my 2012 return.

Here is what the letter said:

"Dear Taxpayer:

"We received your Dec. 31, 2012 Form 1040 federal individual income tax return, but we need more information to process the return accurately. Please send us this letter with your reply within 20 days from the date of this letter.

"Please enclose only the information requested and any forms, schedules or other information required to support your entries. DO NOT SEND A COPY OF YOUR RETURN, unless specifically instructed to do so. We will issue any refund due to you in about 6 to 8 weeks from the time we receive your response."

Hmmm...it seems that 6 weeks have not elapsed! Never mind. :-)

OK. I'm glad to hear that I was wrong, and that what you have to do is easier than I thought it would be.
