PDF Converter?

A few days ago my Quicken Premier 2010 did an on-line update which included downloading a new PDF converter/printer. I had a freebie of this which I have used for a long time with no problems, but thought maybe the Quicken PDF converter might provide some new functions. I gave my consent to download and install this Quicken PDF converter but have not been able to get it to work. It seems I must now do an on-line purchase/download/install of Quicken's Converter 3.0 or go all out and buy their Suite 3.0.

I thought the one I downloaded was a free trial version, but it never worked. Did I overlook something? How may I best get this resolved, and is there any hope that I might get my old PDF converter back up and working?

The converter I just downloaded and installed is the Quicken Amyuni Document Converter 400, Version 4.0.0.7, licensed to Intuit. It downloaded at the time Quicken was doing an on-line update.

Thanks for any insights.

Gordon

I use, and suggest, PDFCreator on Sourceforge.

Then you can print toi a PDF from *any* programs.

However I do suggest in NOT installing the Browser toolbar.

Thanks, this info matches my installation in that I have the same Version 4.0.0.7 and everything seems to be installed right. That is when I go to Ctrl Pnl and click on Devices and Printers, my Quicken PDF printer shows up. When I right click on the PDF printer icon the pop-up shows several options. When I left click on Printing Preferences I get a pop-up that shows the printer as expected but it has one line that reads, "Licensed to Intuit, Inc. and there is a click button to the right of this. When I click on this button I get a pop-up that has two slots to fill in. These slots are presently blank. One has the title, "Licensed to." and the other has the title "Activation Code. I don't know what I need to key into these blank slots.

The quicken pdf converter can only be used from within Quicken. It does not replace any 3rd party pdf converter such as CutePDF. You can not use it from another program to "print to pdf".

Thanks, Laura, that is what I was about ready to conclude. I haven't yet tried it from within Quicken, but I'll do so later. The main problem here is that when the Quicken PDF reader installed it deleted my previous version PDF reader and I can't figure out how to get that reinstalled.

Second response...I just tried using the Quicken PDF printer from within Quicken and it worked very well. Thanks for enlightening me on this. I was really stumbling around in the dark. But, I still haven't figured out how to get my original PDF converter/printer back out of the grave. It is no longer on any of my setup windows.

We are back to my earlier suggestion. :-)

I'm not sure what "original PDF converter/printer" you are referring to. Can you tell us the name of the program.

If you are referring to an earlier version of the Quicken/Amynui software then you may be out of luck. You have the latest version and once you upgraded to version 4 I don't think there is any way (or need)to downgrade to a lower/earlier version.

The original was labeled PDF995 in my control panel - printers window. The manufacturer was not listed. I think I downloaded this as a freebie several years back, but I don't remember the details.

Anyway, I found this same PDF printer on another computer and copy/pasted the install file, then moved it to my computer. This seems to have worked. I can now print PDF files by means of this PDF995 printer.

Still, I'm curious as to why the Quicken/Amyuni PDF printer offers this pop-up screen with the registration blanks, implying that if I would fill in the proper user name and password I could use this PDF converter/printer for my printing tasks other than those within Quicken.

I would really like to get one PDF editor/converter/printer set up on my computer and not have to skip around with making these choices. Any ideas as to how I could do this?

Antares 531,

I've been using PDF995 for years without any problems. First with XP and now with Windows 7 64-bit. I could never get the Quicken PDF printer to function properly. You can use PDF995 for all applications. To use it in Quicken, just select it as your primary printer under Quicken's printer setup.

I resorted to PDF995 in Quicken because for unknown reasons, the Page Scaling function is grayed out when using my main printer which is a Canon i9900. I won't get into the discussion for that problem because it has been unsuccessfully addressed at least twice in this NG without a solution. The use of PDF995 is a VERY satisfactory solution for me and it allows me to print 11X17 and scale the page to fit.

FWIW, I use the paid version of PDF995 to eliminate the "popup" that the free version presents. I paid $9.95 for the full licensed version and from my perspective it is well worth the money.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, Richard. This seems to be the best way to go. I did have some objections to the advertisements that PDF995 threw up but I will probably buy the ad-free version after I've settled down a bit and am sure no other significant problems exist.

Thanks, Notan. I am still considering buying a full version that will let me edit PDF files, but haven't made up my mind on this, yet. That was one thing that caught my attention with the Intuit Quicken PDF converter. One of the pop-up windows indicated that there was a PDF editor/converter/printer available from Intuit, but I don't remember the cost.

For all intense and puposes you can not "edit" PDF files, even with Adobe Acrobat Professional. { I use Adobe Acrobat Professional v9.4 and Adobe LifeCycle Designer ES 8.2 }

You can modify PDFs (insert pages, deleted pages, use typwriter, etc) but do't expect to "edit" a PDF like you would a MS Word document or spreadsheat. The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a published data format.

I once again suggest PDFCreator. It is free and you can create a PDF by printing from

*any* application. It also has an Adobe Distiller like function where you can take the output of multiple applications and merge them into one PDF. For Example; Take the output of a Quicken report and merge it with an Excel Spreadsheet.

Yes, I agree, Notan. Bullzip is great. I do use PDF Xchange Viewer too, and it allows a limited amount of editing, which has been fine for my needs so far. It's also nice that in addition to being free, both have native x64 versions that run well on Win7.

I will agree that there is a modest level of modifications. But Editing, true editing, is not what a PDF file format was ever formulated for.

editing, is

I wasn't aware of this, but I guess I haven't really looked into it very thoroughly. I've always done an edit - select all - copy - paste from a PDF file into MS Word. Then, after doing the editing I print from MS Word to my PDF printer...print to file.
