Quicken PDF Printer?

When I print a recipe from FoodNetwork, one of the available printers is "Quicken PDF Printer". I'm guessing this writes a PDF file, but where? What is its name? How do I get the file out to a physical printer without paying big $$$ to Adobe?

You don't have to do anything special. If you have selected the PDF printer, you will be asked for the name of the PDF file during the print process. As far as I know, you can place that pdf file anywhere you can place any other disk file.

To print the pdf file to a real printer, just open it (Adobe Reader is free), and click the print icon ... like any other pdf file.

Sorry, I just noticed that you were trying to create the pdf file from other software than Quicken ... I don't think the Quicken PDF Printer is usable anywhere but in Quicken.

Try CutePDF Writer, it's free and works anywhere I have tried to use it.

Download and install PDFCreator

Then you can print to a PDF using "good" free software.

BTW: I use Adobe Acrobat Professional 9.x

PrimoPDF is another choice; some of the others include a tag line of advertising and such. Look at your options.

The Quicken PDF printer is an application supplied by Intuit when you install Quicken. It can be used like any other printer application installed on your machine and you do not have to open or use Quicken to make use of it. When you select it and press Print, it will ask you the name of the file and where to store.

So it you want to save something to pdf, select the Quicken printer.

You might want to double check that. Depending on the country you are in and the version of Quicken, the PDF printer is licensed from Amyuni and has been modified so that it will not work from any other application vesides Quicken. Many of the options found in the (paid for) Amyuni version of the driver have been disabled in the version included with Quicken.

I have the US version of Quicken. My Quicken Printer works fine with Firefox. They are no options with the printer. Clicking on Properties in the Print screen brings up an Amyuni screen showing their licensing of the app. But the printer does work !

You'll find PDFCreator goes much futher such as a Distiller like capability so you could conceivably join the ouput of an Excel Spreadsheet with that output of a Quicken report.

Robert - Have you tried within Quicken printing to the PDF output (you have to set the PDF printer up in Q first to receive the output). Then, after 'printing' a report from within Quicken, indeed Howard is right. You can use the Quicken PDF printer from other applications. It overlays the Quicken produced file (ie: I don't get a file dialog menu from the other applications I print), but he is right -- it does work.

You consider it works when it doesn't allow you to name the PDF file, but overlays a PDF file created from Quicken?

I sure don't consider that "working".

It definitely doesn't work "like any other printer application installed on" my machines.

Well, on my machine it ask for a name and where to store the file and then creates a pdf. It doesn't overlay anything since I can name the file what I want and store it where I want. There are no other options available. But it does work.

Hi John - You're right about that; no argument here. I wouldn't use it as a day to day replacement. In fact, originally, I thought that Robert was right that you couldn't use it at all. I do seem to remember trying it when it first came out several years ago. I see that the does work better for Howard in a subsequent post that it does for me. FWIW, I use PrimoPDF at home, CutePDF at work, for my PDF-creations.

(I hope you're blocking out time after Q 2011 appears next month for our assistance! Yeah - I know, you take a while to get to the new release. I think I read that they jerked around with some of the main panel options and navigation might not be so easy. I'll withhold judgment until I see it.)

Be careful, I tried installing the latest version on my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) machine last week. I use ESET Smart Security and it went wild with alerts and spyware alerts. It seems that PDFCreator tries to install numerous (and hidden) toolbars and other things. I finally went back to old faithful, CutePDF.

Actually, both the Quicken PDF Printer and CutePDF Writer can print Quicken pie charts.

I created a Quicken Spending > Spending by Category report/graph; closed the report, leaving just the pie chart displayed; and successfully printed to both of the aforementioned PDF printers.

I also successfully printed a Home tab view with about 8 graphs (3 pie charts, 5 bar graphs) as well as other displays, to both the Quicken PDF Printer and CutePDF Writer.

The PDF file aesthetics are not as good as the screen display in Quicken, but the basic information (chart and text) seems adequate.

Some versions of Quicken have had difficulties printing from the File menu. I did the above tests with Q2010 RPM R10 U.S.

Well, at last, we are finally seeing the same thing - though not drawing the same conclusions. I got the same result when "printing" the "Where Your Money Goes" to a PDF file.

But, as I said earlier; Quicken has had some problems printing via the File menu print options for quite some time - as I recall, the problems were not limited to printing to a PDF file.

And as I have already posted ... the problem you are experiencing, does not demonstrate that Quicken can not print graphs to a PDF file - as you said. The only thing you have proven is that Quicken can not print that specific screen to a PDF file.

I'd like it if Quicken could successfully do everything it suggested it could do ... but then, I'm a realist.

If you have not already done so, I suggest you post this problem to the Intuit/Quicken feedback site, at:
