Stripping categories off and starting over but retaining transaction history

Is it possible to take an existing Q2006 file, strip out the categories and bring the rest of the data forward to Q2010?

I was attempting to delete/merge obsolete categories several years ago but in that dialog I could not access those beyond a certain point (alphabetically). The assumption is some corruption in the file and a repair did not fix it.

The alternative would seem to be just starting an entire new file from scratch, and if there is any way to avoid that I would like to.

Also...is there a way to view the file with categories in it...and possibly edit it, other than via the Quicken program?

TIA Jim

No (useful) way I know of.

Can you imagine of a way of doing this would not be damaging to your existing data?

I can't imagine the source of this problem: but you should have stopped right there and addressed this problem.

Because you use the term "repair"; I suspect you are an ex-Money user. But since "repair" has mostly never been a Quicken term ... I provide the following "validate" comments, just to make sure.

[If you are an ex-Money user, I would suggest you "repair" your Money file before you have Quicken convert it.]

The most straight-forward approach to Quicken corruption is to Validate a Quicken Copy of your data (and test to see if the problem exists in the Validated Copy). While that's also an unreliable approach ... you should definitely try it.

[If Validate does not fix the problem; you might want to try a "super-validate": initiated just like a Validate, but while holding down CTRL+SHIFT while clicking Validate.]

If the Validate does not provide beneficial results: if you have some idea about which categories might be corrupted, you *might* be able to deal with them individually.

If you think only one, or two, categories might be corrupted; the fix is simple. Edit the category. Hold down the space bar until you have reached the end of the category name. Then re-key the category name.

If you have widespread corruption in your category list that Validate did not correct, I think you have a serious problem.

The first hurdle to overcome would be to have Quicken "find" the corrupted categories. This would be the most questionable part of the process. If you think you know something about the name(s) of the corrupted categories, you might be able to use Find/Replace to find those categories, and replace their names ... one category name at a time.

For example: if the category named Groceries has some garbage in its name, but the text "groceries" is not corrupted, you might be able to Find categories that contained the text "categories", and replace that text with "groceries". [If the corruption in the original text was not in the text "groceries", the Find/Replace could remove the corruption.
