Portfolio Value and Cost Basis Report Does Not Agree with Actual

The Portfolio Value and Cost Basis Report does not agree with the actual totals for the account because I have about 10 portfolio entries that have been sold and don't belong in the report.

For example, when I run the report it shows one entry for a security where the totals for Cost Basis = 0.0 and Balance = -8405.57. If I view the Transaction History for that stock, I see 21 entries where there was a Return of Capital (RtrnCap). These entries were classified as _DivInc. The total of these entries equal $8405.57. Therefore it appears that Value and Cost Report is picking up all of the entries of Return of Capital and subtracting them from the "Balance" even though the security was sold many years ago.

The only way to make the report come out correctly for the entire account, is to uncheck those securities where I'm having a problem like the one described above. I have about 10 securities where I am having this kind of a problem and wonder if there is a way to edit the transactions to fix this problem or do I have to modify the reports and uncheck all of the securities where there is a problem?

If you haven't already, you may want to consider using the "Portfolio Value " report instead of the "Portfolio Value & Cost Basis" report when only int erested in the securities still held. To limit the display to the "Securit y:, "Cost Basis" and "Balance" columns as appears in the "Portfolio Value & Cost Basis" report, select "Customize".

Yes, that works with only one problem. There is a line for "Cash" shown at the top of the report AND at the bottom of the report. So "Cash" is counted twice in the totals. I'd like to get rid of one of the "Cash" lines but no luck so far.

The "-Cash-" line at the bottom should be the expected entry. Did you perh aps create a security named "Cash"?

If you haven't already, you may also want to review the investment transact ion lists for "placeholder transactions".

Regarding the original problem, there have been issues reported with respec t to the adjustment "Return of Capital" makes to the cost basis especially when there have been multiple purchases of the security. There are "adjust ment" transactions that can be added to correct for the issue.

I hide securities I know longer hold so it's usually a simple matter of not including hidden securities in the report when I don't want them.

What do you mean by "Hide" securities and how do you do that?

not including hidden securities in the report when I don't want them.

To hide a security, open the "Security List" window (select "Tools"->"Secur ity List" or press Ctrl + Y), check the box in the "hide" column for a secu rity you would like to hide and select "Done".

Thanks. It has been so long, I forgot how to do that. They still show up in the Portfolio value Report even if I Hide them. So I identified the 4 stocks causing the problem and modified the report so they are not included. Everything working hunky dory now. Thanks again for your help.
