Q2003 linked cash & investment acct don't "reconcile"

I opened up an investment account with a brokerage and set up a linked cash account. To date, all that is in the account is cash (well, cash & cds), but every time I try to reconcile my statement (and I download the qfx file from the brokerage), Quicken says it doesn't balance. It looks fine to me: the total in the cash account is correct and the total in the investment account is 0.

So, finally, I decided to see what would happen if I let Quicken "fix" the problem for me. What it did was zero out the cash-linked account and put all the money into the investment account. I simply do not understand why. Can anybody explain? What's the point of having a linked-cash account if Quicken doesn't think cash belongs in it?

Secondarily, I discovered that this also screws up my income tax reports since the interest in the investment account doesn't show up as interest in any of the reports I've been able to locate.

Since I do hope to start using some of that cash to buy stocks and bonds, I'd like to understand what is going on before I have other kinds of transactions to deal with.
