Q2004 Dlx - Downloads cap-gains as dividends

Feb 08, 2006 6 Replies

When I download from Fidelity Investments, I've noticed for both short & long term gains, the transactions are wrong. The memo field has "Long term Gain" or "Short term gain" but the amount is in the dividend box instead of the proper box. I've been having to edit these transactions, moving the amount from Div to either SCG or LCG as the case may be. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a Q2004 DLX bug or the fault of Fidelity Investments?

I noticed this when I downloaded my 2005 year-end distributions from Fidelity to Q2004 Deluxe. Cap gains were correctly reported in Q2004D from previous distributions from Fidelity, so I'm pretty sure this is a change made by Fidelity.

Same problem here. I have for some time been converting Fidelity dividends and capital gains distributions to income reinvestments. You can do it all in one transaction screen, and there's some other reason for calling them reinvestments - I think it has to do with keeping the cost figures correct but I don't remember exactly.

It cost basis shouldn't be different whether they are one reinvestment transaction or two transactions - income then buy. I leave them as two transactions.

I think what Jim was thinking of is "amount invested".

I believe that's right - if you receive a dividend and then do a purchase, it adds to a field called "amount invested" as well as the cost. A reinvested dividend only adds to the cost. If you bring up a portfolio view such as "holdings" you can see both fields. I have a few mutual funds that I have a loss in if you only look at the cost field, but if you compare the present value with the amount invested, I have a profit due to the dividends received. Thanks John.
